This is indeed exciting. I remember when I was in grad school and working on an exhibition at the BL, one of the curators introduced me to the shelf of red VCH books, a resource I’d not been introduced to. Was so valuable for my research. And continues to be.

Our #ArchiveOfTheWeek, this fascinating notebook, shows that if you were travelling from Chesterfield to London in 1840 you would have changed coach 17 times and have needed 65 horses in total! The 158 mile journey would have taken 7 hours and 45 minutes. #EYAConnections

Out now! A newly described and sorted Early Modern record series at The National Archives, WARD 14. The series contains records relating to the Court of Wards and Liveries, including a bunch of stuff from the 1640s as the court was winding down. discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C1...

Our latest #NewAccession are papers not only of the Tupton Hall estate, but a network of estates throughout Scarsdale from The Hill at North Wingfield to Pratt Hall, Brampton. Owners from Yorkshire became owners moving to Paris. Tupton Hall became Clay Cross Secondary School in 1936.
A table filled with dozens bundles deeds, dating from 1568 to 1892.

Obelisk at #Garendon Park and monument at #Shepshed (originally at #Dishley) to Ambrose Phillipps (d. 1737), who landscaped the parkland on return from his Grand Tour and decided it needed an obelisk (and Temple of Venus, and Triumphal Arch, now shrouded awaiting restoration). @vch-home.bsky.social
