Build 1.3.2 is out. Uptake trunks are physical now - every boiler room's gas path is a real duct up through the armoured decks, cut through every plate it crosses. Plus internal deck torpedo mounts and re-fitted bow resistance. navalestimates.com/news/build-1...

I have been quiet lately because I have been engrossed in the new game under development - Naval Estimates. Here is a post about how the game, even in its current state, can be used to illuminate design decisions. #navalhistory @navalestimates.bsky.social

Build 1.3.0 is out. Italy and France join the nation roster, along with a 1928 start date. Torpedoes are added, both as deck mounted tubes as well as internal torpedo rooms. Alongside, a massive rework to hull forms, deck flare and sheer, as well as machinery weights and power curves.
Simplified 3D render from the ship designer: Stanly-class destroyer, US Navy, 1920. Low quarter view of a narrow dark-grey-hulled destroyer with red boot topping, raised forecastle, two funnels with black caps streaming smoke, pole masts with lookout tops, a US flag, and heavy rigging. Armament: four single guns - two forward by the bridge, two aft on the deckhouse - and two triple torpedo-tube mounts amidships between the funnels. A bow wave and wake mark her underway. Caption bar: length 115.6 m at waterline, beam 10.3 m, draught 3.94 m, design displacement 2,100 t, 34.5 knots at 31,321 hp, range 4,750 nautical miles at 12 knots.

And of course, since we already have the 3d view and penetration visualization there... might as well combine the two. Something incredibly satisfying about slotting these two pieces of the whole together.
3D view of a nine-gun 18in salvo landing around a Bunker Hill-class battlecruiser (US Navy, 1920) at 20,000 m. Tall white shell splashes rise on both sides of the ship, which sits inside red dispersion ellipses drawn on the sea; faint trajectory lines streak in from the upper right. A Fall of Shot panel lists each result - shorts, overs and wides from 64 to 300 m. A textbook straddle: hits, zero of nine. Expected hit rate 6.5%, and the sea got all of it.

Naval gunnery in this era is a numbers game - even with a perfect solution, hits are not guaranteed. Now you can look at what the accuracy values on your guns (and now turrets) actually mean in practice.
Turret Gun Danger Space & Pattern window from the designer, analysing fall of shot for a 12in/45 BL Mark XI (dispersion 5.07 mrad) against a side-on battleship target box at 15 km. A side view shows shell trajectories descending from the left onto the target at a 15-degree fall angle, with the danger space marked in red along the waterline; an overhead view shows the 50% and 90% dispersion ellipses (634 x 179 m and 1,156 x 326 m) around the target with eight simulated splashes marked - one a belt hit. Stats below: danger space 37 m, hitting space 66 m, hit chance 7.4% per shell, 46% per 8-gun salvo.

For today's new arrivals: yes, it's real, free, and plays in your browser. Welcome! Current state: four navies, three start dates, regular design competitions (US 1920 running), and a tool to fire guns at your own ship. Coming next: France, Italy, torpedoes and a big focus on lighter ships.
Simplified 3D render from the ship designer: BB-49 Scheme A-class
battleship, US Navy, 1920. Elevated view of a grey-hulled ship with
red antifouling below the waterline, tan planked deck, two lattice
cage masts (US flag on the aft one), twin funnels, rigging running
bow to masts to stern, triple-gun main turrets fore and aft, and
casemate secondary guns amidships. The caption bar reads: length
220.6 m at waterline, beam 33.0 m, draught 9.71 m, design
displacement 46,300 tonnes, 21 knots at 34,235 hp, range 10,000
nautical miles at 12 knots.

Also in version 1.2.X, the first version of the penetration analysis tool - fire a gun (from your design library, or freely specified) at your ship, and see what's vulnerable.

A few last minute additions - customizable deck and hull colours in the 3d visualizer, and some new details on the ship models - casemates with proper embrasures (which can cut up to the deck above), and blast bags (bloomers in USN parlance).
A dreadnought design in Naval Estimates' 3D hull viewer, painted in RN B5 Intermediate Blue with a light grey superstructure. An open "Customize Textures" panel offers deck, metal, and hull-plate finishes plus historical Royal Navy paint schemes - 507 greys, Home Fleet, Victorian Black, Tropical White.

After you design your ship, it can be interesting to take a look at its armour layout in 3D. This short video demonstrates that, and the new effective thickness option for the ship 3D visualizer.

The gun is only one half of the equation... how you get the ammunition to it is another, and can vary significantly depending on circumstances.
The turret designer in Naval Estimates: The Dreadnought Age. Design parameters for a twin 12"/40 BL Mark IX turret - barbette mount, hydraulic drive, full enclosure, 100 mm Krupp armour, power-assisted loading; a top-down plan view of the twin-gun turret; and the new ammunition supply panel, tracing rounds from the magazine up power-driven linked-cage hoists, through a working chamber below the gunhouse, to the breech - 1.4 rounds per minute per gun from a 33.8-tonne supply chain with a crew of seven. The design summary shows 360 tonnes total, a 6.18 m roller path, and 21.7 km maximum range.
