I also sometimes manage to infuriate people with my favourite offbeat policy suggestion: there should be a link between university student fees and the average fees paid for 11-18 education.

Well, I'm 20 years late to the party on this one but this is why it pays to hangout with the Earth Sciences people when you're near their building. TL;DR - Geology is complicated. It's good to ask geologists before you dig deep holes or you will learn SURPRISE GEOLOGY.

This whole State of the Force speech thing is just weird, isn’t it. A political speech delivered in a way that expects applause, which is never going to come from its actual audience. Just so awkward.

I accidentally spent £17,700 on 400 subscriptions to the LRB for Home Office staff and now the Life in the UK test is asking applicants to rank Derek Jarman films from most to least emotionally resonant?

I want a Batman story in which Bruce Wayne invents video games, ultimately providing a low-cost home entertainment option that helps significantly reduce street crime from the mid-1990s onward.

One question I have started asking at job interviews which is a bit full on is "what's the most difficult thing about working here" and if nobody gives a non-bullshit answer I don't want the job.

I absolutely agree, but what a lot of people are doing is competing for status within an organization, institution or movement, with not so much thought as to the success of that institution and in that context, harnessing the McVibes can be personally advantageous.

This is an endemic problem extending outside the dating world. People don’t know how to have conversations any more. So many interactions are just people talking at each other and there’s zero curiosity - as though you can make people like you by overwhelming them with your content

"The Bank of England was set up by Tony Blair" It's easy to forget that Tony Blair had been in power since 1694 when the Bank of England was founded. Good job Brain of Britain Liz Truss is here to remind us.

The complete and total collapse of state function in the face of far right extremists. It is frankly ludicrous that Daniel Thomas continues to be at large given the series of crimes committed which he has literally filmed.

NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The amazing Giuseppe Petricca has only gone and photographed the Sun at noon there, every few days, for a whole year. #Dedication 🔭🧪👌 ℹ️: science.nasa.gov/image-articl...
The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.
