Classic stock and flow confusion. Like everyone who claims company x is bigger than country y, when they are confusing market valuation and gdp

That it ends is so important. There is no second chance. This is it. Make the most of it.

The Britannia Shield sounds like a bowls tournament you might find on ITV4.

This is not true. In Wales, where we are true connoisseurs, we do lasagne and chips.

Good to see a proper ragù traditionalist. None of this watery tomato sauce nonsense.

Watching the #damilola doc on #BBC2. It was when this atrocity occurred I learnt the meaning of 'anomie' which described the mindset of the perpetrators.

Might help if we got over the fixation with £100k as some magic salary of significance - given it’s been mesmerising policy making for at least 15 years.

Yep - was deserted when we were there. This whole thing is an impressive bit of PR.

Quite - really not hard to get to from the UK. The fuss really does seem like a triumph of PR!

Meanwhile our two were completely different. One an atrocious sleeper, hated being swaddled etc etc, the other at their happiest wrapped up in a little pod and would fall asleep blissfully. Almost as though they’re individuals!

The desperation you have in week 3 when the buggers aren’t sleeping and you’re exhausted and some well meaning but smug peer parent says ‘Aren’t you doing Gina Ford? Rigorous routine is magic. You just need to stick with it.’ It’s very seductive. And makes you feel crap when it doesn’t work.

And just emphasises how weird the Christo-Fascism stuff from our neo-right is. There’s no meaningful constituency for it. (I know it’s all about US money…)

The sooner the racists just come out and say what they want the better. Just hope that when that happens we are, as a nation, who we claim to be.

And even that works for some people and not others. When they are tiny, what kids really need is functioning parents, so absolutely just do what you need to do to get through.

Chris Davies @crd37.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Absolutely this. Wanted to write a book for new parents summarising all the advice (controlled crying! attentive parenting!) and saying: here it is. None of it is guaranteed. Go with what works for you. But don't get hung up if it doesn't work, try something else. Whatever you choose: it'll be fine

Of course! People have been reviving stuff for centuries. Fashions come and go. But for every Bach there’s a thousand Salieris. And so the world turns. It’s a great reminder that even things we personally hold dear are, in the end, ephemeral.

What this conversation has done, however, is prompt my daughter and I to dig out the biggest selling music from the 1920s. A fascinating tour, and amazing some of the numbers these records did!

Chris Davies @crd37.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Absolutely. My sister, who is pushing 60, wouldn’t be found dead listening to 60s music (and in fact would rather be listening to hardcore). This is the challenge for popular music: it’s so intimately linked to fashion that it’ll be difficult to sustain itself in the long run, regardless of merit

There’s definitely part of this that’s driven by patient demand. We should invent an activity that makes people feel like they’ve had surgery without any of the actual surgery

The contemporary music my kids listen to is tremendously varied in its influence. If I had to push it, I’d say Latin music was more significant than Anglo rock for their generation.

I also sometimes manage to infuriate people with my favourite offbeat policy suggestion: there should be a link between university student fees and the average fees paid for 11-18 education.

That's precisely my point - not that we don't consume art from the past, but that we consume a tiny fraction of what has been produced. In the now we often conflate popularity and merit - but it's a poor indicator of what genuinely endures. I mean, Mrs Brown's Boys has been popular...
