🚨 New report out today Thirteen years' worth of inflation in the past five has left households £2,900 worse off Read the analysis 👇️ buff.ly/QbGKuKU ‎
Quote graphic
James Smith, Chief Economist at the Resolution Foundation, said:

“Having experienced 13 years’ worth of inflation over the past five, families across the country are struggling with the cost of living. Unfortunately, help is needed just when the public finances leave less room than ever to provide it.

“While the hit to incomes from rising prices has been felt right across the board, the hardship has not been equally shared. It is poorer families who have cut back hardest on heating and are falling behind fastest on essential bills, and conflict in the Middle East is set to keep energy prices high.

“The Government can't borrow its way out of this, and repeating the expensive blanket support of 2022 isn't an option. Any new help must be squarely targeted at the poorer families facing the greatest hardship – starting with their energy bills.”

Why no one is having kids / the UK is hostile to everyone via stupidly complex regulation: We have just got our childcare offer for 30 hours free childcare, and it *increases* what we pay vs having no free childcare. There is a slight quirk in there but it's privatisation at play, basically.

Basically AI allows software engineers to produce shitty code *faster* and in higher volumes which increases the amount time spent on code reviews and revisions nullifying the productivity gained from producing the code in the first place.

With the constant drumbeat of far right complaints about immigration, it's easy to forget that there are other movements out there demanding social and political change. Here it is less visible - for now - but in France, Germany and Spain there is evidence of left revival

Re the debate on the cliff edge where tax-free childcare is lost at £100k leading to people keeping their income below this amount, it’s obvious that such cliff edges are bad as it skews decisions about work – no-one should be worse off if their earnings increase. /1 🧵

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

In case people are not fully across the Fairford story: What appears to have happened is that five men from London went to a small country village in the middle of the night to siphon fuel for resale. In small country villages, people notice things, especially at 1am. A farmer called the police.
