RIP Chris Wickham. Unlike so many historians who emphasise particularities and contingencies, he was the master of constructing grand, coherent, beautifully rendered worlds out of his evidence. This, from his 2021 Past and Present essay, is a masterpiece of historical writing.

Sharing some relevant reflections on AI as an attempt to "square the call center", as described by Mark Fisher as the closest one can get to encountering the centerless system of capitalism, from 'Why We Fear AI':
Why We Fear AI, page 44

This similarity of AI and neoliberal bureaucracies is not lim-
ited to this optimization, to their internal workings. They share
some peculiar properties, too, in the way it feels to interact with
them. Once again, Mark Fisher’s description of actual bureau-
cracies turns out to be surprisingly enlightening about AI. His
example for the most telling, most characteristic experience of
neoliberal bureaucracies is the call center, and many of the prop-
erties of call centers can be readily identified in AI. It’s a great
essay, and worth quoting at some length:
As a consumer in late capitalism, you increasingly exist in
two, distinct realities: the one in which the services are pro-
vided without hitch and another reality entirely, the crazed
Kafkaesque labyrinth of call centers, a world without mem-
ory where cause and effect connect together in mysterious,
unfathomable ways, where it is a miracle that anything ever
happens, and you lose hope of ever passing over to the other
side where things seem to function smoothly. What exem-
plifies the failure of the neoliberal world to live up to its own
PR better than the call center? Even so, the universality of bad experiences with call centers does nothing to unsettle the
operating assumption that capitalism is inherently efficient,
as if the problems with call centers weren’t the systemic con-
sequences of a logic of capital. […] The call center experi-
ence distills the political phenomenology of late capitalism:
the boredom and frustration punctuated by cheerily piped
PR, the repeating of the same dreary details many times to
different poorly trained and badly informed operatives, the
building rage that must remain impotent because it can have
no legitimate object, since—as it is very quickly clear to the
caller—there is no-one who knows, and no-one who could
do anything even if they could. Anger can only be a matter
of venting; it is aggression in a vacuum, directed at someone
who is a fellow victim of the system but with whom there
is no possibility of communality. Just as the anger has no
proper object, it will have no effect. In this experience of a
system that is unresponsive, impersonal, centerless, abstract
and fragmentary, you are as close as you can be to confront-
ing the artificial stupidity of Capital in itself.6
Artificial stupidity, artificial intelligence—tomayto, tomahto. Cer-
tainly, most of what Fisher says about the call center and artificial
stupidity applies to today’s AI. The properties of the social situa-
tion that Mark Fisher described, the situation of being a consumer
in late capitalism, now are condensed into the properties of a
chatbot. Why We Fear AI, p. 47

The Japanese multinational conglomerate
SoftBank, for instance, is developing an AI tool to send even
Fisher’s “anger in a vacuum” into a real void: their voice-to-voice
model “SoftVoice” converts the voices of callers, with a special
feature called emotion-canceling that simply deletes any anger
from the audio stream it’s applied to—as if the anger were the
problem, rather than a symptom of a broken system. Other times,
language models are deployed as a technological substitute for
the first layer of the call center, as customer service, as a sales
bot, etc. SoftVoice treats as the problem not the impersonal and
dysfunctional situation that is relegated to (and thus heightened
in) the call center, but the effects of that situation. Similarly,
the use of language models as substitutes for call centers is also
squarely aimed at making sure that you no longer encounter the
fellow victim of the system. With the call center operator of Mark
Fisher’s description, it was at least possible to perceive the absur-
dity, even tragedy, of a situation in which communality with a
fellow victim was impossible. No matter how much personality
we might try to project onto an AI, this one is not a fellow victim.
We can talk to it, but no matter how much conversation unfolds,
we ultimately remain alone; the tragedy of the impossibility of
communality in the call center gives way to a kind of void with
the AI. The realm in which we fall here, if we drop from the realm
of smooth, hitchless service delivery, contains not tragedy, but a
subtle, uncanny horror. You are alone, but not left alone, you have
to talk, but no one real is listening. When you try to type your
way out, back to the other realm, you have to talk like the bot,
to “think” like it, to become like the thing that is trapping you in
the absurdity. Mark Fisher may not have thought it possible, but
maybe this is an even truer encounter with the system itself, in
its unrespo…

Interesting survey on attitudes toward AI among academics. One thing that struck me: millennials (vs Gen X and boomers) and early-career researchers are *more* likely to distrust AI. fdslive.oup.com/www.oup.com/...
Slide: Researchers and AI: Survey Findings

Text: OXFORD
UNIVERSITY PRESS
Researchers and Al: Survey Findings
aby Boomers & Gen X have a larger proportion of 'Pioneers', whereas Millennials have a larger proportion of 'Challengers'
% of each researcher profile per generation

*bar graph: baby boomers and Gen X both described as 8% “challengers”; for millennials, the number is 17%*

It should be noted that 'generation' was not asked directly; it was calculated using reported age. The sample is smaller as the 40-49 years' age category cut across the generation bands and was therefore excluded from this reporting.
The remaining groups were categorized into broad generational bands using the following age categories:
Millennials: Up to 39 years
Generation X: 50 - 59 years
Baby Boomers: 60 - 79 years
Silent Generation: 80+ years
N=1,416
14Slide: Researchers and AI: survey findings. Text: OXFORD
UNIVERSITY PRESS
Researchers and Al: Survey Findings
Early Career Researchers have a larger proportion of 'Challengers'
% of each researcher profile per career stage

*bar graph giving breakdown of percentage of early-career vs. mid- and late-career academic attitudes. 16% or ECRs are designated “challengers” vs
12% (mid) and 8% (late)*

Generally across career stages there are similar proportions of each researcher profile, the exception being a larger proportion of 'Challengers' in the Early Career Research category, compared to other career stages.
Career Stage was based on self-reported categorization of 'early, 'mid", or late.
