a genuine hard thing about teaching is that once you've done it long enough it's nearly impossible to put yourself in the shoes of someone learning it for the first time. it's easy for me to go "why are you unable to remember literally everything i said"- about things i've taught for 10 years

"All knowledge and information should be free" is a radical statement b/c it comes with radical politics. One cannot make knowledge free in a world where everything has a price. It is an anti-capitalist statement and therefore has nothing to do with billion dollar tech companies (except opposition).

The problem with this entire “talking across difference” approach to politics is that it assumes a shared consensus about democracy that no longer exists b/w the 2 main 🇺🇸 political parties. You don’t need to have lunch with people who don’t believe in free elections, equal rights, & the rule of law.

If the lessons Democrats (& democrats) draw from DOGE is “right idea, wrong implementation,” we are doomed. Everyone involved in the unprecedented crime that was DOGE needs to go to jail forever, & Democrats need to rebuild all of the programs & agencies first, not do digital management consulting 🤦‍♂️

We need to rephrase the whole discussion in terms of hazardous products, instead of "minds". And then we need to make sure that there's liability. A model hacks someone? Put a C-suite guy in jail. A model produces sexual harassment material? Put a C-suite guy in jail. Watch how fast things get safe

It is bad for real research, but useful for programming and data manipulation. No real researcher should be using LLMS for search, summaries, or writing. They are antithetical to serious research, in part because they just make stuff up.

I think AI for research and development is a good thing. As a developer it has sped me up probably 8-10 times what I was doing before. However, I don't like it for the arts and humanities, I don't like the products that propose it as a friend or assistant, and I don't like it replacing real people.

A feature of post-war German democracy has been that the left has traditionally had far more of a firewall to the far left than the center right has had with the far right. The central role of anti-communism in Cold War West Germany created a structural asymmetry that has not been reckoned with.

funny to me that last year taylor lorenz was privately trying to suggest i was being funded by peter thiel after we got into an argument over her shitty takes, and now she’s literally running cover for him saying being evil is good. quite a journey she’s on.
Taylor Lorenz: "Listening to this whole interview and these comments in context you see he is actually making a pretty nuanced point. You can criticize him all u want but taking clips out of context to manufacture outrage is so lame— critique what he actually said!"

This is crap for two reasons. 1: polls show, clear majorities of all parties support expanding childcare access 2: if parents are wary of childcare, it's because Reps spent four decades vilifying employed moms, stoking false fears of daycare, and underfunding programs in ways that limit care quality

I think this is correct, and I've been thinking a lot about what replaces all this stuff. If it is going away, you'd think the institutional players would have some idea of what might take its place. But they don't seem to have a vision for that, or any interest in it. It's private equity mindset.

New — I wrote about this weird thing where people within the Republican party keep being exposed as Nazis and the party then tries to claim each one is an aberration. The facts, as I lay out here, indicate otherwise:

A spate of recent revelations have shown the ideologies and their adherents are one and the same.

It is absolutely shocking how little Democrats have learned from Trump. The #1 thing he's taught is that swing voters will still vote for you despite "controversial" positions. So stand up for the truth, and let people know why. The offended ones weren't going to vote for you anyway.

I don't know what Zohran Mamdani or anybody else would do if they had kinglike power. But I would say Mamdani, in terms of, if you knew nothing about what he has said or what he believes, if you just saw what he has done governing, this would not look very different if another liberal candidate in that primary had won.
