for all the crowing about how asking people to not use slurs and to call people the right pronouns is "just like 1984!!!", the rise of terms like "unalive" is a hell of a lot closer to Orwell's depiction of Newspeak imo

Mass adoption of generative AI tools is rewriting the old adage that has long been a thorn in the side of restaurant and retail workers: “The customer is always right.” But what happens when the customer expects you to play along with something AI made up? www.theverge.com/report/10029...

The AI creep is seemingly ubiquitous in customer service jobs now. In reporting this story, @gabydvj.bsky.social heard from movie theater workers, baristas, and Apple Store employees, all of whom have had customers ask for products or features that don’t exist. Read more: buff.ly/4togSFP

Given that the average length of ownership for Warner Bros over the past four decades is nine years, I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that they’ll do it by fucking up and then selling the company again.

Fun fact: Tesla went with a giant touchscreen instead of knobs for the Model 3 purely to save time and money. Knobs would have required spinning up a whole supply chain. The company spun it as a luxury feature and much of the industry followed suit. But it was always an inferior substitute.

This is a good illustration of how so much of AI theft isn't indirect (ie, data sucked into a model to train the chatbot) - it's actually **direct** copying, but *enabled* by GenAI. Of course it is: chatbots absolutely suck at creating good, new stuff.
