In the labor strife of the last few months, we see the clear impact of the two austerity budgets generated by the Wash. State Legislature in 2025-2026. Ferry worker sickouts; state employee walkouts; picketing by teachers and college staff: Each are consequences of deep cuts to state services.

Today, Seattle's kindergartners took their very first steps into Seattle Public Schools, joining their fellow scholars for a brand new year! This year, every single one of them - from kindergarten through 12th grade - starts the year with something new: free breakfast and lunch for each student.

So SPS needs to get real & reach an agreement before September 2. How can we make that happen? Tell the school board to get Superintendent Ben Shuldiner to reach a deal. They can nudge him. Email them at schoolboard@seattleschools.org and tell them to settle with SEA so school starts on time. /end

July was ICE’s busiest month yet in the Puget Sound region. It’s a stealthy surge, without the helicopters or smoke grenades of Chicago and MN. But the surge is real, with real people taken every day. Each red pin is someone’s family member, neighbor, coworker, loved one.
Screenshot from iceout.org (People Over Papers) showing community ICE reports in the Seattle-Tacoma-Everett region from 7/1-2026-7/31/2026.

The whole urban region is covered with map pins in red, yellow, and green. The pins stack on top of each other, making them impossible to count. Screenshot from iceout.org (People Over Papers) showing community ICE reports in the Seattle-Tacoma-Everett region from 6/1/2026-6/30/2026.
Most of the urban region is covered with map pins in red, yellow, and green. In some places, the pins stack on top of each other, making them impossible to count. North Seattle, Bellevue, and Bothell have fewer reports than Tacoma, South Everett, and S King County. Friend 1 asks, “does your bird talk?” To which friend 2 replies, “Please… don’t.” Panel 2: friend 2 continues, head in hand, “he’s on this alpha male influencer thing right now.” Behind him, the bird - posed and wearing sunglasses and a leather jacket - is leaning forward on a tiny easy chair in his enclosure. Panel 3: with his hands clasped, easing back into his chair, the bird says, “stops eating seeds. Focus on your net worth.”

Mayor Wilson and her people powered base are powerful. 1. They broke through the bureaucracy to fix the Late 8. 2. They are sending a massive expansion in bus hours to voters after the council tried to defund it. 3. They won the universal school meals fight after the council tried to defund it.

In his thought bubble, gears are turning. Panel 3: inquisitively, he thinks to himself, “why did I come upstairs again?” Behind him, crawling up the stairs in pursuit is a horrifying ghoulish monster with a long body and many legs.

SSHD has ambitious plans to build or acquire 1,800 units over the next 6 years. The start-up financing for the agency largely comes from a 5% tax on corporations with payrolls in excess of $1 million. Last year, the tax brought in $134 million, nearly 2.5 times the developer’s expectations.

According to a presentation by SSHD staff, the developer will make a net annual revenue of $2 million, even after accounting for the aforementioned rent reductions and freezes. This will finance $60 million in bonds, allowing the agency to immediately cycle capital and invest in more buildings.
