it’s been ten years easily but the song title “Take a Knee My Ass (I Won’t Take a Knee)” is still the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life and I think about it weekly

thinking a lot rn about how Europe has insanely great third spaces, it's walkable, it has a good education system, it reallllly teaches WWII history, they have good social programs, etc, and none of that has seemed to help in preventing the rise of the far right

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I really liked “Choosin’ Texas” when I first heard it back in March, and I think the reason it connects is simple: Americans yearn deeply for the power of 90s Country.

A world where a twist ending is repurposed as a video title. where a thing's climax has been removed, leaving an advertisment for the gap where it used to be. such things are commonplace in. the twilight zone

A crayon artist sits with their legs crossed in a chair next to a wall they have covered in dinosaur illustrations. They are wearing overalls and a bandana. They exude the confidence of an artist who has seen their vision to completion. However, like many creators, their vision is not shared by everyone. They are confronted by a man in a sweater vest, “Heard you been drawin dinosaurs on my walls.” The artist replies, “You heard right.”

Artist’s note: I try to do my drawings quickly so they maintain that spontaneous feel I’m going for (something we’ve discussed in previous posts). For this one I ended up redrawing the artist’s pose and subtle facial expression over and over again until it felt right.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

I don’t remember whose insight this is, but it blew my mind when I first read that to understand American history you have to get that race law was designed to increase the number of enslavable people (one-drop rule) and decrease the number of claimants to indigenous land (blood quantum)
Jamelle Bouie writes: yeah this is a separate conversation but one of the things that hasn’t quite bubbled up from scholarship into mainstream thinking is that american slavery was a system centered principally on reproduction. forced birth for capital accumulation is what it was

When Dolly Parton covered Stairway to Heaven in 2002, she *added* lyrics: Oh, the great almighty dollar Leaves you lonely, lost and hollow You can't fool yourself forever You got to work to get to heaven If we listen and hold fast To every question that we asked The truth will come to us at last
