Combination of excitement for actually having an effective candidate in Talarico (he carried the Austin area in the primary by an obscene margine, like 75-25 or something) and a constant background dread that Texas may just elect Ken Paxton anyway despite being literally the worst possible candidate

Especially if you don't immediately register the incident as an assault, or the perpetrator is someone close to you, or you still need info (when substances are present). You're going to keep communicating. Post-assault behavior doesn't tell us anything.

took me 15 yrs, from around age 12 to age 27, to fully admit to myself that I'd been sexually abused as a kid - to myself! - and then it was even longer before I talked to anyone else about it - your mind often protects you from these memories bc the alternative might be completely falling apart

Texas public schools lost more than 14,200 immigrant students last school year. The actual number could be far higher.

Texas lost at least 14,200 immigrant students last year
The actual enrollment loss amid increased deportation efforts is much higher as the federal definition that identifies immigrant students is limited, experts said.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

INTRODUCTION
1.
On the morning of January 7, 2026, Renee Nicole Macklin Good (“Renee”),
a thirty-seven-year-old United States citizen, poet, and mother of three, dropped her six
year-old son off at school, drove home through her own south Minneapolis neighborhood,
and stopped her car in the middle of Portland Avenue. Federal immigration agents were
operating there. They were masked, as was their practice throughout Operation Metro
Surge. Renee honked her horn to warn her neighbors. Her partner got out and began to
film. Renee stayed behind the wheel. She was not the target of any investigation, and she
was breaking no law that any federal officer had authority to enforce. Numerous vehicles,

Gendered violence is a systemic cultural and societal problem. And when one of these cases boils to the top, you can see that in how many survivors come forward to explain how similar their experiences are, in ways both big and small.

Yeah, the ability of the two party primary to act as a lens that immediately magnified MAGA from a 15% party to a 50+1% party has been Not Great. I think the European experience shows the Racism Party can still grind it out, so it's not a perfect firewall, but you can't get one-shot like 2016

one of the biggest problems with college towns, esp the Ivy League variety, is the "town and gown" tug of war, a battle too often won by the *undemocratic* gown - the last 100 years in New Haven, CT are probably the best example of this
