Man, this answer from Ta-Nehisi Coates about how he felt about Kamala Harris saying that she wants to have “the most lethal fighting force in the world” is really good. He talks about why she might feel like she has to say that, but gives most of his response to the victims of that lethality

A propos of nothing: my grandfather was a politician who spent the last stretch of his career during the Berlusconi ascendance years. he'd say you can lose and lose again, but the most important act for anyone involved in politics is to preserve the seeds of anti-fascism for the next generation.

The problem of social care is largely one of a missing insurance market. The obvious solution is to pay for care via general taxes, treating these as if they were insurance premia. Cutting benefits or the triple lock are bad alternatives.

Plant-rich diets are the food system's electrification. Petrol cars only see 18-25% of their fuel energy get to the wheels; EVs 87-91%. Heat pumps are 2 or 3 times more efficient. Food has its own combustion engine: a chicken turns about 13% of its feed calories into food, worse than a petrol car.

The analogy I always think of is soccer: soccer is really hard, so difficult that even the best strikers regularly miss shots on goal. But they miss a lot *less* - and under more difficult circumstances - than a regular person or an amateur player. Humanities is a 'miss less' practical field.

In my view, this is bad. Authors share a common budget with their readers. You either work to make your writing clear or you shift the burden onto the reader to work out what the hell you meant. I think most would agree that you do your reader a disservice by expecting them to do most of the work.

14 September, Holy Cross Day, was traditionally a day for “nutting”, when people went into woods and hedgerows to gather ripe hazelnuts. Folklore warned that the best must be gathered before Devil’s Nutting Day on 21 September, when the Devil roamed the woods to claim his share!
