Our flagship storefront is a carbon sink - felled oak studs & hemp + renovated vs new space. The climate wins stack, while demonstrating what's possible

The exposed masonry is a repeating pattern of brick and two courses of cinderblock (made before today's concrete masonry units, or CMUs). There are 3 pieces of plywood and 1 oriented strand board (OSB) running from side to side across exposed oak studs. The oak studs are 200 years old in some cases, but all came from old trees that were felled from storms or disease so they are extremely dense. In between the studs, which are 24" on center, is hemp hurd mixed with lime and water (hempcrete). Hemp grows quickly, and has many uses from building material to rope to fabric. The color of the hempcrete appears almost yellow grey, but becomes more amber colored as it cures further.

Just updated energy demand figures for our electric & heatpumpified passivhaus home. Cooling demand crept up during the summer heatwaves, but is still relatively low compared with hot water generation demand. And zero energy bills thanks to a combination of PV system and battery storage.

I don’t feel happy saying this, as Finland‘s economy is still depressed (the austerity cuts of the right wing government having done what #austerity does), but I can’t in good conscience recommend buying Finnish paper or cardboard products, and even timber is questionable.

To add to this: Build green, resilience, community, change & power. We're building walls made of Virginia hemp & Southwest US lime. There are fewer than 5 commercial hempcrete projects in the US. We are shifting that -- an act of resistance against industrial foam & fiberglass & for resilience

Wow, the memo that timber, earth, straw, hemp construction are the quickest ways to affordable, sustainable housing clearly hasn’t got through to the Western Australian government. Nor has the fact that sprawl is a dramatic misguided development that is very difficult to rectify. Climate arson.
