I was in a swimming pool in Iceland. It had just happened. Spent the last day of our vacation on a friend’s couch watching it all on TV. Left Reykjavik just after midnight, got stranded in London for a few days, but had a friend’s couch to sleep on. So relieved when we finally got home.

Sunday reading: I wrote about the worldview that drives Trump’s politics. He doesn’t really have an ideology – but he has a consistent, grievance-fueled idea of how power and status should be distributed, and that aligns him with the Right’s ideologues. This week’s piece:

Does Donald Trump Have an Ideology?
No, not exactly. But he has a consistent, grievance-fueled idea of how power and status should be distributed, and that aligns him with the Right’s ideologues just fine

This isn't the first time the USA has placed 50% tariffs on Canada. In 1890, the USA's Tariff Act was touted as a way to build up American industry, but the true goal was forcing the annexation of Canada. It backfired and made Canada stronger. This is the story. 📸 LoC 🧵1/10

Also inside the lettering are a heart, butterfly, and gold sparkle. The lettering reads ‘Maybe it will happen today’.

🥒 The ladies' flower-garden of ornamental perennials.. London, W. Smith, 1843-44.. [Source]
Illustration of three cultivated double anemone flowers from "The ladies' flower-garden of ornamental perennials," London, 1843-44. The flowers vary in color: one is deep red with layered petals, another is dark blue with a densely petaled center, and the third is light pink with white-edged petals. Each flower has a rounded, textured center surrounded by multiple layers of petals. Green, finely divided leaves and slender stems support the flowers against a plain beige background. The detailed botanical drawing emphasizes the ornamental and diverse nature of this perennial species.

A digital illustration of a Axolotl Kaiju rampaging in a city. The kaiju is center frame, mostly colored in bright mottled pinkish reds, standing on unseen hind limbs, forelimbs held out wide, all its little gill appendages are flared out, its eye are spouting little pink flames and it is blasting a rainbow-colored beam of destruction out of its mouth. All around it are fairly crudely rendered silhouettes of buildings engulfed in lurid and non-naturally colored flames. At the bottom center of the frame in a stack of rainbow-colored lettering reading 'Maybe it will happen today'.
