If Bradford doesn't know what's in the budget, what has he been doing with his time on Council all these years? There’s no mystery behind Mayor Olivia Chow’s budget record — there’s just math www.thestar.com/gift-redeem?...
Candidates are free, of course, to criticize where Chow chose to spend this money — and the effectiveness of the programs the money funds — but the recurring schtick where Bradford and Alexander act like there’s just no way of knowing where city hall is spending its money without hiring some experts is wearing thin.

The city has had no shortage of budgetary reviews over the last decade. Bradford was on council for at least two of them: A “value-based outcomes review” in 2019 and an update to the city’s “long-term financial plan” in 2023. In both cases, the outside experts hired to review the books concluded that, while the city should always be conducting audits and looking to make programs more efficient, there’s no reasonable prospect of stumbling across the kind of massive savings you’d need to make a serious dent in the budget, especially when you factor in population growth and inflation.

The only people I feel sorry for here are the tenants www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Since the early 2010s SIREG has bought older rental buildings, converted them to condos and sold them to investors seeking rental income. Under the arrangement SIREG was to manage the properties, collect rents and pay the condo board management fees. After those costs were covered, investors were paid monthly rent dispersals.

SIREG condos were pitched as hands-off investments, allowing buyers to become landlords at a low entry price with no need to deal with tenants. Investors had no information about their tenants, including contact information.

Chretien/ Martin gutted EI in 1995 We were already behind the times. If Mark Carney doesn’t reform EI soon, we’ll be left in the dust www.thestar.com/gift-redeem?...
Meanwhile, EI continues to operate on the outdated assumption that work is full-time, generally stable and long-term in nature, and that job searches should take weeks, not months or years.

As a result, in 2024, only half of unemployed Canadians qualified for regular EI benefits. Statistics Canada’s own headline number for that year was 83 per cent, which paints a much rosier picture. But that more generous rate is calculated only among people who already paid into EI and who left a job for a reason the program accepts, which screens out more than a third of unemployed workers before the counting even starts.

At the same time, the youth eligibility rate fell nearly 15 points in just two years, and roughly a third of the claimants who did qualify for EI exhausted their benefits before finding another job.

His cyclist friend was killed. Why did Doug Ford’s response include ‘lmao’? www.thestar.com/gift-redeem?...
Doug Ford is laughing his ass off. His words, not mine.

The premier of Ontario is four weeks away from the end of his 21-week summer vacation. He is 11 weeks away from the beginning of his 10-week winter vacation. He is three and a half years away from the next provincial election. And while there may be bumps in the road ahead, God help him, at least there won’t be so many bike lanes: not after he spends an estimated $48 million ripping 19 kilometres’ worth of them out of three Toronto streets, ostensibly to ease traffic congestion.

His plan has attracted some naysayers. Michael DiBernardo, who lives in East York, is one. He believes Ford has a tendency to spend big money “for very transparent, very stupid reasons,” and he takes issue with the premier’s refusal to entertain compromises the city has proposed to restore car lanes to Bloor Street, University Avenue and Yonge Street but keep bike lanes in place.
