October is LGBTQ+ History Month. The month celebrates the achievements, history and civil rights movements of the LGBTQ+ community. Today, it is the story of Jim Egan.
In 1986, Egan, who was self-employed much of his life, retired and applied for spousal benefits for Jack Nesbit, his partner of 40 years.
This was refused because they were a same sex couple. Egan launched a court case that made it to the Supreme Court.
While they lost their case, the court ruled to include sexual orientation as a prohibited grounds for discrimination under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This paved the way for the legalization of same sex marriage.
