Someday, when the bubble bursts and the AHA comes crashing down, historians will come begging on their knees for primary sources. Philologists will be waiting, and they will not forget all the times they were told "editions aren't real publications." Still they will say: "Here, it's open access."

When you automate the Chortlemuffin Effect, it compounds each error exponentially. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...
One barrier to bigger AI-induced gains is the technology’s tendency to produce “plausible-looking output” with weaknesses or mistakes that are not immediately apparent, explained Jessica Reif, assistant professor of management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

“This makes it more likely that an error propagates through a workflow instead of being immediately corrected,” which can cause problems to snowball, said Reif.

I don't use GenAI because I want to be capable of doing my work. I want my work to be my work. I want my successes to be *my* successes. And I want to do the work that I can only do if I don't have GenAI getting in my way. Each author and intellectual should have this conversation with themselves.

It makes sense with all of the smaller units of a real that I see (1/4, 1/9, 2/9, 3/9 to get 1/3, 1/36, 1/64), but I still don’t get why the Navarrese and Spanish more broadly chose *11* reales to a ducado. A prime number!

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

I feel like the Brits get us better stylistically. They are also pro-dependent clause. This would be a fun linguistic study. How does the English prose of L1 English-L2 Spanish Hispanists compare to other L1 English academics and how do different academic Englishes perceive it?

Ohmygod you have no idea how relieved I feel!!!! (I see you saw the 2nd post) I think it has been extra "bad" during the dissertation because I'm having to switch between Spanish sources and English explanation. Did not have these issues in my quals/proposal, I think bc there was less Spanish

Working on revisions for an article in Spanish, and I can see so clearly where my syntactical habits in English come from 😅 Spanish speakers (at least in Spain) are totally happy with lots of dependent clauses and lots of mid-sentence little additions/clarifications between commas!!

I LOVE how @propublica.org dealt with official comment here, editorially and stylistically.
The Trump administration says none of this is happening.

"DHS is NOT arresting U.S. citizens by mistake." "There are no 'indiscriminate' stops." Allegations of "racial profiling are disgusting, reckless and categorically FALSE." "The pattern is NOT of law enforcement using force." "ICE does not zip tie or restrain children."

But that is precisely what is happening, and at a far larger scale than previously reported.

My impression has always been that Python doesn't handle XML well. I'm just seeing if I can do things for the hell of it. Librarian buddy was able to get it to work via Python, but had to stream it 1 chunk at a time to get it to work (which is I think what Oxygen is likely doing under the hood)

I loaded it into Oxygen, and it wanted me to load it as a "huge file" (not enough memory for "large file"!!) I have been trying to run an XPath for a good 5 min. Still has not finished... Even funnier, while it's well-formed XML, it isn't valid! No schema in sight!
