Petty footnotes are load bearing. I realize academia is being destroyed from the outside, but we also need petty footnotes to make sure academia is motivated enough to get out of bed in the morning

Librarian work buddy told me about an XML dataset she was trying to work with. The file is *4.5GB compressed & 157GB when extracted.* So ginormous data set + friend is a Python person = not fun time. I asked her to send me the file for fun to play with (bc I'm still a twisted #DH person deep down)

There are reasons other than net take-home pay that generations of American parents steered their kids toward college. I don't see how "go into construction!" is helpful unless paired with more robust worker protections and a true safety net, especially in right to work states.

Really classy to end with Dr. Hayden, and with that quote specifically.
A lady came in, and as you know, in public libraries, there are a lot of people who are homeless, so they just need a place to be. She comes into the central library and goes up to the information desk.

She has very interesting attire, and this big bag. She asks to see the head of the library. I was the head of the library. The librarian — and this is what they do — tried to get more information from the person. They said, “Well, what would you like to see her for?” She opens the bag and she puts out on the table an injured bird.

And the librarian says, “Oh, what would you like her to do?” And the woman said, “Somebody’s got to care.”

Then they have all the transcripts (and the ai token bill) but no sensemaking. so they make another app — a layer that will make sense of all the useless transcripts. But of course sensemaking isnt just pattern spotting. It’s interpretation. AI cannot do either because AI cannot be curious

The University of Colorado at Boulder has its own humanities program for engineers because they can’t hack the classes for the rest of the student body. Lots of engineers arrogantly think they can waltz into an upper level philosophy class and breeze through.

This is the Stolen Neighbors Quilt.
It has 11,000 squares.
Each represents a person taken by ICE in MN.
100 people labored for 6 months to create it.
The care behind it gives me hope.
Each square makes me weep.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

Top left: Anakin looks skeptical. Text reads: "THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARDS AND THE PUTLITZERS ARE WOKE AND IDEOLOGICAL"

Top right: Padmé looks at him expectantly. Text reads: "AND YOU'RE GOING TO PROVE THAT BY LISTING THE GREAT BOOKS BY RIGHT-WING WHITE MEN THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED"

Bottom left: Anakin looks blankly or judgmentally.

Bottom right: Padmé looks frustrated. Text reads: "SERIOUSLY, BRET, NOT ONE EXAMPLE? GOING BACK TEN YEARS??? NOT A SINGLE BOOK THAT YOU COULD EVEN PRETEND SHOULD'VE BEEN INCLUDED?"
