Part of the post-Trump repairs to democracy must be inspectors general. What if we house them in the legislative branch, where a president cannot fire them? Courts could serve as a check.

I genuinely thought "dafuq?" when I read it. Not performance benchmarks, not revenue benchmarks, but *version number* benchmarks. Why. What does this even mean.

And done. Excluding Boston (has its own database done previously), MA people died of smallpox or smallpox-adjacent causes in these numbers: 251 in 1872 365 in 1873. In Boston, the 1872 toll was 927. In the first 4 months of 1873, it was 292. I'd forgotten I only did Q1, so I'm not done. Sigh.

Today in unusual 1873 deaths, the form contains a whole short story about the death of Frederick Knowlton, age 27 (married). See the alt text.
Cause of death: "Accidental - by the parting of a rope attached to an elevator, while hauling goods to an upper story, he being under said elevator." (Workplace safety measures were not a thing in 1873, my friends.)

The longer this goes on, the clearer it is that we don't come back from this period unless there is a thorough set of consequences and definitive actions to address the things that let it happen. Pretending it's all over and we can just move on won't cut it.

Random and NOT depressing news item from 1873! (I was looking for something depressing, of course, but came across this.) Fourth of July ballooning in Pittsfield, Massachusetts!
News item: "Prof. Spencer, of Winsted, is in town with his big balloon, completing the arrangements for his ascension July 4th. The balloon holds 22,000 feet of gas, and the filling of it will be done from the main pipe at the east end of the park, from which place Mr. Spencer will start for his trip among the clouds. The ascension will be made at 2 o'clock, and it will be the Professor's 21st aerial tour."

Sometimes you have to choose the lesser of two evils? I suppose. But that suggests that sometimes you don't have to. And we should expect to not have to. And we should keep criticizing those who force others into evil choices, until lesser evils are no longer the ones who decide about good & evil.

Back to the small dramas of 1873. The word "murder" in the mortality schedule always catches my attention. Here, Oliver Doland (the mortality schedule says Daland for some reason) was murdered by his roommate at the Westford Almshouse on December 14, 1873.
Clip from the mortality schedule, giving the details of Oliver F. Daland, Male, Married, age 72, murdered at the Westford Almshouse.Newspaper clipping about the murder - Oliver Doland murdered by his roommate, Samuel Hildreth (age 69), by a blow to the head and then being cut with a razor.

Laws are not pre-existing agentive structures, waiting in the firmament to be discovered and then causing effects in the world by the mere perception of them. Laws are made by people and people can unmake them. That is what Congress is and is for. This can be changed, again.

📣 SING IT, GEN Z! 📣 From the Editorial Board of The Daily Campus: UConn’s AI for ImpaCT initiative does more harm than good. dailycampus.com/2026/09/14/u... Every word of this is 🔥🔥🔥
Quote from article: Our university claims that AI for ImpaCT is designed to “support interconnectivity among teaching, learning, research, innovation and societal impact and to encourage safe, ethical and responsible use of AI.” There is, however, no safe and ethical use of AI when every prompt is harmful to humanity. There is no responsible use of AI when you’re relinquishing your own brainpower to a machine. There is no sensible use of artificial intelligence in education, least of all pouring university funding into a dedicated initiative.

I mean...yeah
There’s an impulse to medicalize Trump’s lies, because a diagnosis of cognitive decline seems objective and, I think, because a diagnosis of cognitive decline feels stigmatizing, and therefore powerful. But the truth is that most mentally ill people do not turn into gravity wells of bigotry and ignorance. Trump’s mental failures are the result of the studied moral choice for bullshit that he made as a young man, and has kept choosing, over and over, year in and year out, no matter the circumstance, no matter the stakes. He is a moral monstrosity, and that monstrous morality has eaten his brain. Thanks to the moral failures of his country, it may eat the rest of us as well.

Both Tim Curry and Dolly Parton played a crucial role in society as people who were unapologetically and publicly different, fiercely loving and inclusive, and also defenders of their own privacy. Losing both so close together is a travesty, and it's on all of us to be those things in their honor.
