I don’t think this is what Arendt meant by this concept. She thought Eichmann was _not_ a “true believer” or a dupe. He was banal in that he was just unthinkingly “doing his job.”

The upāya of Keynes, different lessons for different audiences: in the short term, we dig holes out of a Great Depression. In the ultra long term, we work ten hour work weeks. In the medium long term, we are all dead.

When you have departments that produce fewer numbers of majors why is that always the fault of the department and not of the administrators? “Only two students taking Akkadian. We have to fire you.” “No, you’re supposed to get me more Akkadian students. You’ve failed your job. I fire you!”

I've been listening to _Lady Chatterley's Lover_ in the car, and I'm finding it much less of a grind than _Sons and Lovers_. I don't think of myself as a prude, but I feel a bit squirmy when the narrator has his characters say 'f*ck' and 'c*nt' over and over again.

As wealth and income inequality have become more and more fractal does this strengthen an ideology that qualities like 'beauty' and 'intelligence' are and ought to be distributed along an exponential curve, correlated to wealth & income?

I think the hyper-complex labor intensive affect gets focused on because it fits into a model of measurable work output that is rewarded in our current professional and educational evaluation systems, a sort of quantitative sublime that aspires to qualitative meaningfulness.

I’m fine with “let people enjoy things” and I hope it’s not overly bothsidesy to make the corollary “let people be snobby too.” Learning to make your calls about what’s worth consuming, making, thinking about — in distinction to one’s “inferiors” — is critical to participating in democratic culture

I don’t really understand what “distinction without a difference” means. In the example here, the author of the statement likely means to draw a distinction btw “lying” as a moral transgression and “stretching the truth” as acceptable. That’s a big difference!
A distinction without a difference is a type of logical fallacy where an author or speaker attempts to describe a distinction between two things where no discernible difference exists.[1] It is particularly used when a word or phrase has connotations associated with it that one party to an argument prefers to avoid.
For example, a person might say "I did not lie; I merely stretched the truth a little bit."[2]

skimming rn. always see it in citations, decided to just go for it. i think what's fun about it is that different classes not only like to consume different things, but they have different theories for why they like things and not other things (the things that you like, that are stupid).

One nice thing about Buddhist narratives of karma is how often they describe 'ineffective altruism.' You can just be nice! It'll pay off, maybe for the person you're used to calling 'you,' maybe that's what it'll take to convince you. But you can just be nice!

What's the point of these surveys demonstrating an electorate doesn't know basic facts, expresses fascistic sentiments, or wants impossible things? Pundits seem to offer these survey results as evidence that "this is why we need to put the tools of governance out of reach of the democracy"...

A really delicious theorization of what's going on here culturally is Anna Kornbluh's _Immediacy_ book from 2024. "Three queueing" skips past phonics. Chromebook screens devalue physical teachers. Stdized tests teach reading passages or defining words correctly. Fetish of the right here right now.

Substitute in “being an evangelical Christian in the US” for “being from Yorkshire” and I think you have a pretty good definition of USian evangelicalism.
