Khashoggi's assassination was in hindsight one of the highly salient norm-shattering moments of impunity that helped recalibrate contemporary expectations for outrageous crimes: if you're rich & powerful enough, in the words of the President of the United States, "they just let you do it"

I feel like it's kind of underrated funny that Sam Altman has a stack of marvelous proofs on his desk that he's not going to show anyone until we all learn to say thank you

The problem isn’t that they’re moving past it—it’s that they’re trying to rehabilitate it. Would be better for everyone if people who don’t want to engage with the facts just talked about the play on the field and left it at that.

Listen: I don’t want to minimize the danger of high e-bike speeds. But if the problem here is that stores sell e-bikes that can drive faster than legal limits, then where’s the story about how literally *every car dealership has been doing the same thing for decades*?!?

Hidden cameras show some stores unlocking speed limits on e-bikes, selling e-scooters that go up to 120 km/h | CBC News
A new hidden camera investigation by Marketplace shows how some stores are selling e-scooters and e-bikes with top speeds much higher than provincial speed limits and with recommended rider ages young...

I’m not morally opposed to the death penalty, I’m procedurally opposed to it for ordinary crimes because I don’t trust the American carceral state to fairly apply it. I think it’s necessary in cases of crimes against democracy, but even there I think the condemned deserve a quick merciful death.

YES you're "cognitively offloading" when you have the maps apps do turn-by-turn GPS navigation for you you're "cognitively offloading" when you do division on a calculator instead of doing long division by hand etc. etc. there's nothing inherently wrong with it, people are just weird about AI

This whole shitshow at Cornell is a good reminder that there's no way around unfucking the criminal justice system for rape investigation. Imagine if this had been handled by a competent specialized police organization (and rape and murder investigation ought to be centralized at the state level).

Hegseth, for example, can get a separate murder indictment for each boat strike. We should also encourage other countries to charge them as well where justified, and be open to extradition.

There need to be so many separate indictments so spread out to ensure no one judge or circuit can protect them. And they need to spend the rest of their lives on trial. This can take decades.

Get a ten-year appropriation from Congress. This will require thousands of people. Also authorize a more generous bounty system for evidence in recovering proceeds of crimes.

The strategy next time should be to indict everyone for everything, everywhere. The ex-president, if alive, should get a hundred indictments, spread across as many districts as possible, with as many state charges separately brought as possible. Cabinet members and aides should get dozens.

I don't really care what the law even says in this case. If the law says Trump is allowed to do it legally, then that's a problem with the law. Some actions are so obviously anti-constitutional that the specifics of the law are not really important.

It's full-blown autocratic government using its resources to put its finger on the electoral scale stuff. That's why people need to be hanged/shot/whatever. You don't do that in a Republic. It's a cardinal sin
