People constantly talk about "cheap Chinese AI models" but other than the latest MiMo no Chinese models are on the Pareto frontier- you get better results cheaper by using US models at lower efforts. Qwen in particular is so token hungry that 3.8 Max is *more expensive than Fable* for worse output!

My personal bit of AI cope is LLMs strongly judge text by quality and user framing, so they fail distinguish "high-quality, well written text" from "true". Feed them a slick well-written sell side report and say something nice about it and it's taken at face value or with only very mild pushback.

I had my first real “feel the AGI” moment today with Fable 5.1—it casually mentioned a trivial but niche fact about a firm employee in output it deduced from an unrelated internal database that it didn’t really need to query for the problem I had it solving, in a way a human definitely wouldn’t.

A reasonably principled way to handle training cost accounting would be to do a fast/slow timescale split where 75% of it gets expensed into COGS as the expected serving life of the model is ~1 year, and then 25% gets capitalized as R&D for acquired knowledge/techniques and amortized over 5 years.
