The end result looks so rubbish, absolutely soulless. I can't believe they think this is a good pitch.

Found the email I sent when I got accidentally added to the faculty listserv of an orthopedic surgery clinic and nobody would remove me so I sent this email to all faculty/staff/med students and they removed me almost immediately
Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.

My job is now partially cleaning up design debt from Claude. AI coding speeds up our existing patterns, so issues with design are emerging far faster, and most devs don't have the skills to deal with it (they don't actively refactor).

Refactoring is harder than adding behaviour due to entropy. Refactoring is fighting entropy, while writing code adds it.

Tried reading "The Quest for Meaning" by Tariq Ramadan. Got 15% through it before realising I'm not enjoying it. It makes lot of points very quickly, many references to existing philosophies and ideas, but they're not cohesive. Gives the air of meaning with no core, which is kind of ironic.

One thing I've consistently seen from AI code slingers is anemic data models with zero encapsulation. It makes changes and maintenance a nightmare.

LLMs have made my job as a system designer much harder, because everyone is churning out code and isn't thinking about design at all, it's accelerating spaghetti code. Everyone is inundated with PRs so they're just rubber stamping this shit.

Was walking past this building and through the window saw this backrooms-ass room, so I accidentally took the coolest picture ever due to the window's reflection
A backrooms-ass room with a twilight sky and trees seemingly imposed over it in a dream-like fashion (it's the reflection of the window)

My AI enthusiasm ebbs and flows. Today I’m realizing that some of my perceived productivity increase is an illusion. I merely moved some of the effort from writing code to having to micromanage a coder.

Bear in mind when you ask an LLM to explain why it did what it did (or didn't), you're asking faces on toast to explain faces on toast. It's not explaining. It's plausibly completing. And you fell for it twice.

The original sin of software development
Infographic comparing two views of software development. On the left, a complete feedback loop surrounds a central business goal ("Reduce missed medication doses"). The loop flows through six stages: Understand → Specify → Build → Ship → Learn → Adapt, showing that each shipped increment is an experiment whose real-world feedback informs the next iteration. On the right, a contrasting diagram shows a limited view of development as only Specify → Build → Ship, enclosed in a dashed red outline labelled as the process many teams mistakenly optimise. Beneath it, a warning explains that this narrow focus leads to local optimisation, including building the wrong thing faster, more work in progress, delayed feedback, misalignment with business goals, and little real progress. The overall message is to optimise the whole learning loop, not just software production.

Agile Software Development is NOT break big projects into small sprints. Agile Software Development IS build something, then iterate. I have seen so many teams spend extraordinary effort on the ceremony of Scrum, and never once manage or even try to put some early idea in the hands of users.

You know AI is fucked when AWS is advertising their AI offering on terrestrial TV during match ad breaks. They're desperate for customers and have gone the shotgun approach. We all knew crypto had reached peak when it did the same.

Reminded of a time I did an experiment at a startup. New feature would take 5 devs 6 months, I came up with a 1 dev 1 month experiment to figure out it's validity. Finished & ran experiment, the result: no change. Feature was scrapped quietly. No discussion. We never ran another experiment.

A vicious cycle of four steps surrounding a black cat with a thousand-yard stare and a dapper little tie. The four endlessly cycling steps read:

-going forward we're gonna need more of your data to make sure it's you

-ahaha youre not gonna believe this but we had a bit of a data breach

-your data is probably for sale online now

-that means someone could easily impersonate you

I'm finding it helpful to ask whether a particular use of technology refines or dilutes information. Blowing out a two sentence prompt into a two page press release is dilutive. Everybody can see that there's no value added. I think that's a major part of the objection to "AI slop." 1/?

Except, LLM-gen'd and human-written code are different. One was written by someone with a mental model. Modified by humans with another mental model (correct or not), etc. The other is generated by statistical, stochastic methods with constraints. These are not the same.
