Photo of a female Eurasian Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) perched near the top of a small, dead branch placed on the edge of a pool of water for use by this species. Her body is facing away from us and slightly towards our left so we see her back and her left flank, but her head is turned to the right. Her back, partly covered by her wings, reflects a bright turquoise-blue colour, while the top half of her head, a broad band running back and down from the base of her beak, and her tail, are a greenish-blue, with paler blue speckles on the top of the head and along the outer edges of the wings. Her underparts are an orangey-red, and a patch of this colour also appears on the side of her head, followed by a longer patch of white, in the gap between the parts of the head coloured greenish-blue. The beak is mostly black apart from an orange area towards the base of the lower part. Her tiny feet (we can just see part of her left foot, in shadow) are red.

Starlings over the Helter Skelter, Brighton. 1000s arrive here every winter from as far as Scandinavia & somehow they move as one in a murmuration. Each bird is only reacting to its 7 closest neighbours, a phenomenon known as phase transition, yet the whole group ripples like a single living thing.

Jays. Acorns are scarce this year & in many cases the trees that have them only have the tiniest of seeds. I've gathered some Beech mast - which is plentiful. Will they take these instead? As seen below, green acorns are the apple of their eye and are foraged preferentially. @markavery.bsky.social

The Little Egret is one of the smaller members of the heron family, and has a long bill, neck, and legs but a short tail. The Chiffchaff, a small Warbler, is perched centre of the photo on a thin brown branch. The whole background is a blur of soft green from nearby vegetation. The Chiffchaff is perched side on and showing off its tones of brown and soft green/yellow plumage, he his facing towards the left side of the photo.

A beautiful Nuthatch is perched on a thick broken tree trunk, his body is front facing in the picture with his head turned to the right hand side. His chestnut/orange breast is beautifully lit by the sun which also shows off his white cheek, black eye stripe and blue head. The background is a blur of white bluish light and tinged with some green.

A Great Spotted Woodpecker clings to the side of a tree trunk. His front is most white, and so too are his cheeks. He has black cap and a red patch at the back of his head which shows that this a male. His wing is a mix of black and white and so too his tail. There is also a wonderful flush of red on its lower body. The background is a wonderful glow of light green.

This photo shows the top half a Jay with its back to the shot but its head is turned sharply to the right giving a full side on view. His back is a beautiful light brown and his white cheek and throat is divided by a thick wavy black line that runs from the base of the beak. The background is a wonderful blur of light and dark green.

Das Bild zeigt einen kleinen, länglichen und nach oben abgerundeten Stein, dessen Form an einen Hinkelstein erinnert. Der Stein wurde rundherum so bemalt, dass er selbst zum Körper von Obelix wird.
Auf der Vorderseite sind Obelix’ Gesicht mit den roten Zöpfen, sein nackter Oberkörper sowie der grüne Gürtel mit großer gelber Schnalle zu sehen. Darunter setzt sich seine typische blau-weiß gestreifte Hose bis zum unteren Rand des Steins fort. Seine Füße stehen auf einer kleinen grünen Wiese, die mit roten Pilzen und Blumen verziert ist. Der obere, dunkelgraue Teil des Steins bleibt weitgehend unbemalt und wirkt dadurch wie ein Hinkelstein, der hinter Obelix aufragt.
Die Rückseite löst den kleinen optischen Scherz auf: Dort fehlen Kopf und Oberkörper völlig. Stattdessen sieht man nur Obelix’ Arme, die sich von beiden Seiten um den grauen Stein legen. Seine Hände greifen hinter dem „Hinkelstein“ ineinander. Darunter sind wiederum die gestreifte Hose und seine Füße auf der Wiese zu erkennen.
