Just finished a Roscoe Village canvas for @patgilsenan.bsky.social and there's a lot of enthusiasm for change in the 32nd ward! More and more affordable housing, safer streets for all, and participatory budgeting. Couldn't be more excited!

So, what to do? USE YOUR FUCKING BRAIN. THINK: “Would I give this information to someone who wants to make money off my ideas without giving me credit?” Don’t outsource your brilliance to these people. They are NOT good actors. It’s not rocket science; have a drop of self-preservation instinct!

A lot of these people think of themselves as "good people" ™️. But when they're conspiracy brained and think you're going to kill your kids, they're not going to cry over a few "good ones" getting swept up to protect their families. They see it as a necessary evil.

The guy who said this was the dad of one of my brother's friends. Not someone I personally had any real connection with. I remember his name, where exactly we were standing, what the weather was like, everything about that moment. If that doesn't say core memory I don't know what does.

That's so sad. My older relatives had similar attitudes, where they gave up the language and the culture in a lot of ways to seem whiter. I can't fully blame them. I see it as a good example of how white supremacy comes for and crushes us all, even ostensibly white people.

The craziest thing is when I talk to my parents about this now, they defend that dad who said it. "Oh he didn't mean it. He knows we're good people." Yeah, and I'm sure he'd be shaking his head and saying, "that's a shame, they were some of the good ones," as we're pushed into a cage w everyone else

I'm a white Arab American. Most ppl would never know that's my background by looking at me. The day after 9/11, family friends, who did not know, where at the house and openly talking about how all Arabs and Muslims in the US should be rounded up into camps. I was 12 years old. We were never united.

and whose apparent top priority on street safety is making it easier for drivers to obstruct their vision. So far it seems like, if you care about safety, this guy shouldn't get anywhere near the mayor's office. Why is he a main speaker at the party?
From Alex's website

Making roads safer

I will make our roads safer for both motorists and police officers in repealing an existing state law, which prohibits drivers from hanging items from a vehicle's rear view. Illinois is just one of a handful of states that Ban's items from hanging from our vehicles rear view mirror or a fixed to a windshield on the grounds that they obstruct a motorist's vision. The current law allows police to stop motorists for Minor vehicle code offenses but in many cases those encounters can lead to verbal or physical confrontations with deadly consequences for both motorists and officers.

We thought about moving to Humboldt Park when we first moved to Chicago but ultimately decided against it because of the lack of access to the L. Now we live rigbt off the brown line, but getting to the aiport is still a pain. This is a very real thing for so many people.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

Starbucks Workers United @sbworkersunited.org · 25/08/2026
🚨BREAKING: Our union of over 12,000 baristas are officially calling for a Starbucks boycott. Read this statement penned by Starbucks workers on why a boycott from ALL customers, allies, and organizations is necessary to fight back against corporate greed:
BOYCOTT STARBUCKS is written inside a zig-zaggy speech bubble against crumbled paper. Beside it are the Starbucks Workers United logo and an image of a coffee cup being poured out.We, the 12,000 and growing members of Starbucks Workers United, call on everyone who stands with working people to boycott Starbucks until they finalize a contract with union baristas and stop union-busting.
What we’re fighting for is simple: a minimum $17/hr wage, enough hours to live on, better staffing in our stores, and basic workplace protections. Every year, our living costs rise but our wages don’t keep up – a growing pressure many American workers are feeling as corporate greed accelerates unchecked in our country.
Starbucks is banking on customers' blind loyalty to the integrity and values this company once stood for in order to keep squeezing them for profits. At a time when working-class people across the country are struggling in a challenging economy, it is no longer possible to be both a Starbucks customer and in support of workers; choosing to spend money at Starbucks is choosing a law breaking corporation over the baristas who make your coffee everyday exactly as you ask for it.
Starbucks has violated U.S. labor law more than any other company in modern history–the NLRB and its judges have found that Starbucks committed hundreds of labor violations and there are currently more than 550 unresolved unfair labor practice charges still pending against the company. Instead of finalizing a fair and reasonable union contract, Starbucks has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of care for the workers who fuel the company’s profits by wasting millions of dollars on AI and technology that doesn’t work, launching countless gimmicky drinks designed to distract from real problems, and inventing pointless policies that do nothing but make our jobs harder.
This ongoing, irrational behavior by Starbucks and its refusal to settle a fair union contract with workers leaves us with no other choice than to call for a boycott. We know when working people stand up together, we win.
No Contract? No Coffee.

You're both right. This is a design problem. Western is a highway w no thought given to the people who move on it, only to the cars & moving them as quickly as possible w/out regard for safety. If we had properly Street design, they wouldn't have been near each other & everyone would be better off.

I read it as, violence isn't inherently wrong. It's about what you're using it to do. In Troy Odysseus used a dirty trick to kill innocents in violation of basic human dignity. In Ithaca, he uses it to protect the innocent, defending them from the violators. He knows the proper place of violence now

Consistent with a theme I've noticed in progressive policymaking, where advocates/policymakers assume that the only acceptable policy intervention is one that carries no possible tradeoffs, and that there are surely no tradeoffs associated with leaving a horrendous status quo in place.

Time for our daily reminder that a major role of the media *should be* to explain basic truths like, "there have been tons of studies that bike lanes in cities are good for small businesses," rather than excitedly report that some chud said something obviously wrong and present it as common sense.

Seems like ppl think what we're talking abt is "everything stays the same as it is today except a bunch more ppl ride bikes." No, the idea is to build proper infrastructure, redesign streets, restructure our communities to actually function for ppl. That'll take time, but we have to start somewhere.
