If you have a Gmail account, you need to read this. Google's AI now scans your emails and attachments, bank statements, tax files, medical letters, all of it. It turned on by default, and there's a class-action lawsuit over how. Here are 5 moves to shut it off, the switch is hidden in two places:

1. The Main Switch This is the main setting Google shows you, but it's not the only one. Gmail (Desktop): ⚙️ Settings → See all settings → Smart features and personalization → Uncheck "Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet" → Save Changes.

also if you're an admin for an enterprise that needs to be hipaa compliant, turn it off, and check often to make sure it stays off, cause it definitely does not. also check chrome settings as chrome defaults to using your machines to run models

In general, AI scans hashes of all your data to look for malware and CSAM, even if you turn these features off. Humans aren't viewing them (there's too much data for any human to view in their lives). Not wanting Google to know what's in your emails is like not wanting Walmart to know what you buy.

Yeah and after I did this a while back more spam started getting through to my inbox, which I assume is deliberate on Gmail's part. Luckily I'd already migrated to Proton Mail and this simply reinforces that decision.

i would warn folks that you will lose unrelated (to ai) functionality the instant you do this. for example: a functionality you will instantly lose is the ability to have your mail organized/sorted into tabs. google is being an asshole about this. fuck google.

Does anyone know if the old Hotmail is encumbered like this? I don't even know how owns it now. It is a live dot com email address. People always ask me what it is. I have an old Gmail that I only use if a Gmail is needed. I set it up for publicity work 20 years ago. (Omg 20 years??)
