Fair to compare these priorities but that’s a one-year deficit for PPS. So, one Moda Center every 7 years even if local birthrates hadn’t already fallen 30% since today’s 4th graders were born, which they have. Not for oversubsidizing the Blazers, but we’re not gonna avoid closing some schools :(

It's totally understandable that people think you shouldn't rank a candidate you don't want in office; the city & county are telling them that. Here's why it's wrong: 1. Ranking a candidate you don't like *can't hurt* a candidate you ranked higher. 2. It can help block a candidate you hate more.

I would love, love, LOVE a local / regional politician to really pick up the ball and run with this! I know it requires massive multijurisdictional coordination and a lot of time, but just being very vocal about it and keeping it in the public imagination helps!

Just canvassed for @tinakotek.bsky.social today. Chatted with some supporters and then got told to go to hell, so a mixed bag! But it was nice to talk to people and do my part to deny Drazan the governorship.

genuinely shitty for all involved that ODOT's freeway boondoggle spent several years assuring everybody that the Rose Quarter Freeway Expansion would provide tangible and targeted economic investment in Black contractors and jobs only to once again walk it back and ultimately break their promise

Spending the day hiking in Forest Park, biking to dinner at Los Puñales, and then walking across the street to H Mart was a good reminder that Portland is an S-tier US city.

I'm attending a virtual town hall with @councilorkanal.bsky.social, and I'm happy to hear his support for 1) making more Portland streets car-free, 2) relying less on non-profits to address housing/homelessness, and 3) his openness to making changes to NE 7th Ave.

While we're having fun, may I present The Street Trust's endorsement of longstanding incumbent Chair of the Oregon House Transportation Committee, Susan McLain alongside wweek's recent non-endorsement of her from May 2026. www.thestreettrust.org/actionfund/c... www.wweek.com/news/2026/04...
From The Street Trust's endorsements page: At a time when things are already too expensive, we cannot afford to allow crumbling infrastructure to undermine Oregon's economy and impact our businesses, our free movement and travel throughout the state, our employment opportunities, or our ability to get our kids to school safely. SUSAN MCLAIN OREGON HOUSE D29Willamette Week endorsement write up from May 2026: As chair of the House Transportation Committee, McLain played a key role in fumbling the top priority of the 2025 legislative session: a funding bill for the Oregon Department of Transportation whose last-minute failure embarrassed Democrats. She failed to build enough support for her package, even as her party held commanding supermajorities in both chambers. (The compromise version is about to die via the ballot box.) She tells us she couldn’t have worked harder or talked to more people, which isn’t exactly reassuring. If this was the best she could do, we wonder if McLain is any longer capable of forging the connections needed to push meaningful policy through the Legislature.

Worse, McLain co-chairs the Joint Committee on the Interstate 5 Bridge—perhaps the only project going worse than the ODOT funding package. In less than four years, as the Oregon Journalism Project revealed, the estimated cost of the project has more than doubled, from $6 billion to $13.6 billion. The replacement bridge may never span the Columbia River, but McLain appears to be in denial. She says the project has been “successful” because “we’ve met every target and goal we’re supposed to.” She refuses to concede costs have ballooned, or admit that her fellow committee members were outraged at project officials for keeping the new numbers under wraps. Discussing the bridge with her is like watching The Office’s Michael Scott drive his car into a lake on the instructions of his GPS.

Driverless cars would be great for seniors in rural communities, for example. But tech companies aren't going to make a lot of money catering to those people. The money is only going to be made in cities and by catering to wealthy people. That will most certainly come at the expense of transit.

Anecdotally: I-5 being closed pushed some folks to transit, and this is a brilliant example of a) why we need to just demolish the inner eastside part of I-5 and b) why when we do that it will be just fine.

I'm curious about noise. I live in a townhouse, and the gas water heater is in a bedroom closet. I'd rather not swap it out for a heat pump water heater if the noise is constant/noticeable.

It cannot be overstated: Urban capacity expansion projects are the *worst* way to invest in freight movement. They cost 10x more per mile than rural and suburban bypass projects, and almost all of the benefit is soaked up by commuters.

It's especially important since ODOT has "design review" authority for changes to its facilities that can even extend to off-site locations. It's come up on the 82nd transit project because ODOT is worried it might cause traffic to divert to Powell or I-205.

I am BEGGING the state of Oregon to realize that funding TriMet helps downtown recovery. It’s not just transit bringing folks to downtown, it’s also the fact that union TriMet employees make decent wages and those dollars get directly put back into small businesses in our city.
