Cars have gradually become bigger & deadlier to people, especially to the most vulnerable people who walk & bike. But because the change has been gradual (+ makes a lot of money for the car-gas industry) we accept this change. Our anger has instead been turned to the new thing on the street: ebikes

I also drove it last week in my car for the first time since the speed bumps went in and 🤩 what a game changer! it used to be that going the speed limit while adjacent to unprotected bike commuters got you tailgated or honked at. now cars are all speed limited by infrastructure

Seattleites are most concerned about traffic safety because we all experience it regularly: narrowly missing getting hit while walking in a crosswalk, seeing people using center turn lanes as their personal speedway, etc. Most people also know someone who has died or been seriously injured:

Street changes can be confusing, like how to drive slowly or where to put out trash cans. BikeLoud folks are seeing a more positive change- families are riding bikes w small children since the buffers were added to Willamette. It's exciting! (Say thanks your Council!) Thanks @pbotinfo.bsky.social!

Tens of millions of American motorists believe there's nothing wrong with texting at a stoplight. Or driving 73 in a 60mph zone. Or changing lanes without signaling. Or rolling right on red without coming to a full stop. But somebody has to do something about cyclists who don't follow the rules.
