We've had the ability to watch, say, Counterstrike marathons, Street Fighter tournaments, or chess matches between computers since the 90s. Spectacles which, by their very definition, would be at a "higher standard" than human play. And nobody wants it. It's entirely meaningless. It has no appeal.

Every time a discourse kicks off over whether AI music, literature or art will be "as good as" the real thing, I'm always amazed more people don't cite that **there already are** creative pursuits where human-free spectacles have been available for decades, and nobody has ever wanted to watch them.

Today is Michaelmas Day which marks the day in the calendar after which you shouldn’t pick or eat blackberries. Depending on your regional bent, folklore tells that on this day the devil fell out of heaven and landed in a blackberry bush, cursing them in fury…

Back in the day when boxers in international heavyweight title fights enjoyed a very friendly and manly boozy bath together after battering each other close to death for 2.5hrs in a French field. Jake Kilrain and Jem Smith, pictured in 1887.
Comically muscular pen sketch of boxers Jem Smith (right) and Jake Kilrain in adjoining bathtubs. A bottle of wine lies on the floor, another one a table. Kilrain smokes a cig. Jem jauntily crosses his mighty thighs. Steam rises.

Weird stuff goes on in the country - I used to work on an old farm & there was a field full of poppies, that is opium poppies, they naturally just grew there. Looked stunning, but it did mean you had to not be weirded out by the clown-masked guy who'd turn up in the middle of the night to nick them.

Yesterday I slept and felt awful, then had a bunch of dreams, woke up feeling much better, and wrote this. On grief and dreams, and dad, and the ways we hold the dead strata.bearblog.dev/ink-through-...
Grief is heavy on me today, or today I am full of grief. I'm in Costa munching on an egg bagel, on a wonky chair feeling tears prick my eyes, my throat catch. Some days are more full of grief than others and I guess one of those days is today.

Yesterday was dark depression, thick black ooze, bitter and sour, the kind which would poison my blood if it lingered; it didn't. Chased away in the night with a long deep sleep, chased away by a haunting dreadful proto-nightmare, chased away by a dream of my dad, smiling

I’m really enjoying Neoreaction a Basilisk by @eruditorumpress.com, which is extremely funny when I was prepared to be just in despair, and also about this set of horrible people
Neoreaction a Basilisk
"Do you know that every time you turn another page, you not only get us closer to the monster at the end of this book, but you make a terrible mess?" Grover, The Monster at the End of This Book
Let us assume that we are fucked. The particular nature of our doom is up for any amount of debate, but the basic fact of it seems largely inevitable. My personal guess is that millennials will probably live long enough to see the second Great Depression, which will blur inexorably with the full brunt of climate change to lead to a massive human dieback, if not quite an outright extinction. But maybe it'll just be a rogue AI and a grey goo scenario. You never know.
There are several reactions we might have to this realization, and many of us have more than one. The largest class of these reactions are, if not uninteresting, at least relatively simple, falling under some category of self-delusion or cognitive dissonance. From the perspective of 2017 the eschaton appears to be in exactly the wrong place, such that were either going to just miss it or only
*shitoads of people dying" bits. And even if it is imminent, there is no reason to expect most of us to engage with it differently than any other terminal diaonosis. which is to say to minimize the amount of time we spend consciously dying.
1 There is, if nothing else, a good Bavesian reason to do so given Brandon Carter's Doomsday argument, which suggests that it is probable humanity is closer to its end than its beginning.
* A hypothetical apocalypse in which self-replicating nanomachines convert the enturety of the world into themselves. Compare to footnote 5.Indeed, my polite authorial recommendation would be to do exactly that if you are capable, probably starting by simply not reading this.
Hmm. Well, no one to blame but yourself, I suppose. A second category, marginally more interesting, is what we might call "decelerationist" approaches. (The name is a back formation from the accelerationists, more about whom later.)

Andy Burnham says 'Universal free social care'. It's a shame that it is nearly always personal experience that pushes things forward, not the empathy required for a just society. That having been said, let's keep our fingers crossed.
Any Burnham quote from a Guardian newspaper report.
“If I look at the people who cared for my dad, they must just feel invisible to the political class,” he said. “They work day in, day out, with huge humour and humanity and skill in what they do … caring for other people’s parents on poverty pay. How have we let this go on so long?”

On Anarchism.
"The easiest way to explain anarchism is to say that
it is a political movement that aims to bring about a
genuinely free society - one where humans only enter
those kinds of relations with one another that would not
have to be enforced by the constant threat of violence.
History has shown that vast inequalities of wealth,
institutions like slavery, debt peonage or wage labour,
can only exist if backed up by armies, prisons, & police.

Anarchists wish to see human relations that would not
have to be backed up by armies, prisons and police.
Anarchism envisions a society based on equality and
solidarity, which could exist solely on the free consent
of participants."

Cregger's Resident Evil is a good example of "Fast Body Horror." In the 80s, a lot of Body Horror was "slow" because in order to execute a special effect, there was one gimmick per shot, so transformation sequences had many cuts and emphasized the mechanics of the gimmick.
