Certain applications - notably realtime 3D graphics and machine learning - need massive parallel processing capability which a GPU provides. If you only have a CPU, you can process in series faster, but you can't do millions of simple ops fast as you can on a parallel device. 240

A 2k screen at 60Hz needs to be feed 360 Million inputs per second. Even if you do very little to create that data, it will take more compute than almost anything. Dedicated hardware makes sense. 120
