Proud queer, based in Vancouver, BC (unceded Coast Salish territory). My politics are best described as eco-left. I will definitely also be posting about pop culture and urbanism, and will certainly be engaging in general nihilism. They/them, please.

Saturday decides who runs City Hall for the next four years. Ads don’t get out the vote, neighbours do. We need people on doors, on phones and at the polls this weekend. Shifts are short, no experience is needed, and the company is excellent. Grab an E-Day shift: go.onecityvancouver.ca/eday

I finally succeeded in cycling northbound across the Granville bridge yesterday and… it took several attempts to find it (last time I tried, I failed to find it altogether). There is not one single sign along any of the likely routes, and even the intersection where you join the path is unclear.

If you think about Black Friday as being [wikipedia voice] "the pivotal point where retailers purportedly shifted from loss ("in the red") to profit ("in the black")" it actually makes perfect sense that a Canadian grocery store chain would celebrate it over a month early.
Photo of a sign in front of a Safeway grocery store in Vancouver. Large text reads "4 days only Black Frid'eh Oct. 15 - Oct. 18" and it advertises Compliments brand toilet paper on sale for $15.99 which the sign seems to think is a good price.

Vancouver continues to turn out in huge numbers for advance polls. Let's hope this continues on Saturday (might we actually break 50% turnout for once??)
Screenshot of a Reddit post from the City of Vancouver official account. Text reads:
The winning streak continues: Vancouver voters close out advance voting with a fourth straight record
Vancouver is on a four-day sweep. You heard us right, soak it all in.

Preliminary results show 29,096 people turned out at advance voting places today, the fourth record-breaking advance voting day in a row.

Across all four days, more than 103,000 people voted in advance this election, up 60% from the approximately 65,000 who voted over five advance days in 2022. While voters continued to report quick visits to the polls, we don’t take for granted how many voters made room in their schedules to vote. Thank you, Vancouver, for making time for democracy!

Voters have one more chance: Election Day, Saturday, October 17, 8 am to 8 pm, at any of 85 voting places.

Most candidates underestimate the massive learning curve that comes AFTER winning. Frances has been smartly engaged with, & communicating, urban issues for decades.

Correct 🌶️🌶️🌶️ take on housing. Concrete example: if we think rooming houses and micro suites are not adequate housing, the humane response is not to outlaw them but to strive to create conditions where nobody chooses to live in them.
In housing, the most important type of urban supply is the supply that almost everyone would reject, given the choice. Will cities ever allow that housing to return? Will we ever find a formula for municipal governance that funds the public services that would improve the conditions of the housing that serves the important function of being the supply of the most inferior version of the good? The cure for the potato famine wasn’t to harvest more lobster and caviar. Maybe most people would choose more lobster and caviar if they had the resources. They might eat potatoes because they lack those resources, but they aren’t just eating potatoes because they aren’t allowed to eat lobster and caviar. They are matching their demand with the supply of an inferior good.

Of all the traits inherent to left NIMBYism, holding people hostage with "we shouldn't have nice things here because it would improve the neighbourhood" has to be the worst. If this bothers you, ask your city to work with senior levels of gov't to build affordable housing complexes next to you.

Voter notice: Vote today — advance vote Oct 10, 8 AM–8 PM at any city polling place; poster lists OneCity Vancouver–endorsed candidates for City Council (vote up to 10), Park Board (up to 7), and School Board (up to 9); Election Day Oct 17, 8 AM–8 PM.

There is so much at stake in this election. The latest announcement of Ken Sim and ABC would delay and politicize decisions for sidewalks, bike and bus lanes, inevitably impacting road safety. This is not what our City needs. There is Advance voting tomorrow(Sat.) and on Tuesday. So get out to vote!

2026 Vancouver Election Update: October 7 End of Day Turnout

Today, approximately 25,142 people turned out at advance voting places across Vancouver, the highest single-day advance turnout on record. This beats the record of 21,824 set on Saturday, October 3, and is a 139% increase over the 10,502 people who turned out on the second day of advance voting in 2022.

While turnout was high, wait times stayed low. With more voting places, larger spaces, and more technology than ever, voters reported quick and easy visits to the polls.

The remaining advance voting days are Saturday, October 10 and Tuesday, October 13.

More info on planning your vote and picking your preferred location here: vancouver.ca/vote

Have a great night, Vancouver!

Hey so it's kind of insane the former leader of the provincial social democrat party was a) looking forward to doing a preemptive end run around the constitution to clear homeless encampments b) was upset they would face obvious criticism for how obtusely reckless this would be
The conversations do, indeed, get bumpy. In 2024, Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath appeared to accuse one of her peers of leaking a draft of a joint proposal to the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, in which the mayors planned to ask the province to use the notwithstanding clause to clear homeless encampments. "Congratulations to whoever decided to leak the draft motion and sabotage a campaign that we could all get behind ... and break the trust of colleagues," she wrote. "Also as predicted the heat has shifted to us and off the other orders of government as predicted. Great move."
