One thing I've come to accept with Wisconsin's elections is that there's a type of person whose main contribution from now until November is going to be pissing in the boat instead of helping row. My main thought at this point is: That's fine. We don't need 'em.

Something that's gone uncovered is coaches talking more about how NIL isn't real. Kirby Smart recently mentioned that a player had a snap count bonus in his contract. That's against the law. And I don't mean stupid NCAA bylaws. It's illegal in Georgia to pay a player for performance!! Arrest him!

The funniest thing about this is every Special Forces operator of the last generation — the exact kind of “warfighter” Hegseth purports to idolize — has the world’s most massive beard. That’s entirely the look of today’s supersoldiers.

The state would lose about $50 million in federal funds yearly I’m pretty sure, versus $2B in beer and wine sales annually; an additional 3% excise appears to fully cover it

I do think part of the vibecession is the fact that a LOT of businesses don't currently run as well as they should because the cost of labor is too high for instance, I spent almost an hour in line at the pharmacy tonight, after being unable to get them on the phone.

Why are the Amtrak Airos a net good for passenger rail in the U.S.? 1) Amtrak desperately needs more trains. These are more trains. 2) Time savings on engine swaps @ WAS, PHL & NHV 3) Cab cars for push-pull corridors save terminal recovery time, non-revenue movements & crew time 🚆

Maybe the reason the economic vibes are so off isn't that things are *worse* than the great recession but because back then we all thought the pain was temporary, whereas the things that are wrong with the economy today have all been getting worse for a long time and show no signs of improving

now that trump has made it okay to just do a ton of illegal dealmaking, just have the next dem president allow BYD in on the explicit condition that they let the UAW rep their workers, and that seems like it would solve most of the pushback dems would care about

These folks generally assume that transit agencies can spend money they don't have (like police departments or the federal government) and some other entity will automatically provide the funds. I can generally make progress on this point by helping people think about transit agencies' PG&E bill

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

We really ought to make a version of the business degree that's actually good and actually attracts much stronger students. Keep the necessary 'finishing school for managers' stuff but stuff most of it with economics, accounting, operations research, and actually rigorous business history.

To get ahead of the gender discourse: 1. In liberal-ish spaces, it's more common to hear shallow & reactionary dating opinions (w/out pushback) from women than from men. 2. Shallowness in *revealed* preferences is not especially gendered. 3. (1) can be annoying but has very few real consequences.

Many high-speed railways that became financially successful had to seek protection/bailout because they didn't become successful fast enough to hold off the debt service bomb. Korea and Taiwan being famous examples. Brightline had delayed construction *and* COVID to deal with.

We already have a lot of those building blocks. The MTA's commuter rebuild in the 1960s was designed around getting speed in every conceivable way. We went to universal high platforms with wide doors on trains to cut time loss. Those trains were supposed to hit 100mph too but never could in service.
