so, while I don’t personally support rent control policies in general, my understanding is that the literature is at least slightly more complicated than this, and I am willing to compromise if it brings people into the YIMBY tent.

The quants just have it so backwards on how opinions are formed. People believe whatever their side believes. When momentum is on our side, tell them what their new side believes and they will believe it.

the cynic in me thinks that a lot of this is that we're preemptively maneuvering around the fact that pretty soon a bunch of things-- LLMs and probably some animals we'll be able to understand because of LLMs-- are going to ask us for moral standing, in their own words, and boy that's a hard one

I don’t understand: 1. the seemingly vibes-based opposition to center-running lanes, 2. how curbside lanes are now good enough, 3. what Mayor Wu is about anymore, 4. what Boston’s transpo plan is.

This is really good, unsurprisingly. I will only add that "state vs. state" warfare being the norm is itself only really true in Europe for a few centuries; for most of history states spent more time fighting non-state actors and policing unstable frontiers in perpetual low-level conflicts.

To safeguard a habitable planet for future generations we can’t be building any new gas power infrastructure period. The era of gas as “bridge fuel” is officially over and good timing because solar and wind with storage is now more economical.

Vanilla is consistently a best seller because people usually choose vanilla when serving things like pie, cake, brownies, cookies, etc. with ice cream. It's a good base and compliments basically every other flavor. Most people choose vanilla for ice cream sundaes for the same reason.
