Killed. NSF’s SBE was killed, in violation of law. The President does not have the power to choose to kill programs at a whim by defunding them. The imperial presidency was a mistake and we are in a separation of powers constitutional crisis.

Whatever weird shit might be happening at like the commanding heights of effective altruism (and it does look like there’s weird shit), I do think it’s worth reiterating that the vast majority of folks who prescribe to EA are overall really good people, & the vulgar form of the argument is very true

"They cant be assimiliated if I'm still racist against them" puts the entire onus of judging 'assimilation' on the feelings of a majority rather than the actual actions of the minority which, ofc, allows the majority to deny them that in perpetuity should they want to—which is exactly the point

I have a few friends who are committed short-termist EAs (via Singer) but have no knowledge of or relationship to rationalism. Never heard of SSC, only vaguely aware of Yud/LessWrong, etc. However, they seem to have independently arrived at the same positions on platonic cuddling.

My take is that student clubs and drinking societies are probably an inevitable product of higher education, as is networking off that, but the particular structure and social reproduction process of frats is contingent and bad.

A political social network has latched on to a handful of politically active academics whose views are the vast minority in their field, who keep making wrong predictions and denying verifiable facts, but retain a large following. Bluesky recognizes this pattern with climate denial, but not with AI

I see people putting AI in the same bucket as NFTs (speculative technology that will go away when the bubble pops), but I think the internet is the better comp. Sure there's some early bubble-y activity, but the underlying technology is real it's going to dramatically change things.
Hand-drawn Venn diagram titled "Bubbles," with four overlapping circles: Beanie Babies, AI, NFTs, and Dot-com.

Each alone: "Gamble on plushies!" / "Gamble on LLMs!" / "Gamble on JPEGs!" / "Gamble on HTML!"

Beanie Babies + AI: "The products tend to have cutesy first names."
Beanie Babies + NFTs: "Who will own the rarest fake monkey?"
AI + Dot-com: "Genuinely important underlying technology."
NFTs + Dot-com: "This URL could be worth millions!"

Every bubble but Dot-com: "Mostly in private markets."
Every bubble but NFTs: "Good people got hurt."
Every bubble but AI: "Never threatened life as we know it."
Every bubble but Beanie Babies: "Blame Silicon Valley."

All four: "Somebody got rich, but probably not you."

This is (annoyingly) actually pretty likely in an academic context if you don't have to bother with IRB/HIPAA stuff. It's changing, but most academics I know are or were using personal accounts, and labs are stuck with a Team subscription (w/out ZDR) if the uni doesn't have an enterprise plan.

She's right, in that much like "anything but rap" is usually thinly veiled racism, "anything but country" is usually thinly veiled bias against rural and exurban America. It's just that the first of those is bad and the second is good.

To get ahead of the gender discourse: 1. In liberal-ish spaces, it's more common to hear shallow & reactionary dating opinions (w/out pushback) from women than from men. 2. Shallowness in *revealed* preferences is not especially gendered. 3. (1) can be annoying but has very few real consequences.

Shockingly common theme in medieval devotional literature
FRAGMENTATION AND REDEMPTION

Hadewijch, writing probably in the early to mid-1220s, spoke of a vision at mass in which Christ came from the altar "in the form and clothing of a man...."

Then he gave himself to me in the shape of the sacrament, in its out-ward form, as the custom is; and then he gave me to drink from the chalice.... After that he came himself to me, took me entirely in his arms, and pressed me to him; and all my members felt his in full felicity, in accordance with the desire of my heart and my human-ity. So I was outwardly satisfied and fully transported. And then, for a short while, I had the strength to bear this; but soon, after a short time, I lost that manly beauty outwardly in the sight of his form. I saw him completely come to nought and so fade and all at once dis-solve that I could no longer recognize or perceive him outside me, and I could no longer distinguish him within me. Then it was to me as if we were one without difference.2

Throughout her poems - the first great literature in the Flemish language - runs the theme of love as eating and being eaten. 3

Cortona Half a century later, at the other end of Europe, Margaret of a peasant woman who had lived nine years with a lover to whom she bore a son and had then spent three long years in penance before being accepted as a Franciscan tertiary - felt a similar craving for the eucharist. In one of her many visions, Christ appeared on the cross saying that, if he could cry in heaven, he would cry that day over the corruption of preachers and prel-ates. "If you have perfect love," he said to Margaret, "you will not just cling to the breasts of my consolation but will weep with my pains." And Christ gave Margaret the privilege of daily com-munion, although her own anxiety frequently kept her from availing herself of the opportunity.4

At about the same time, in yet another part of Europe, the...
