This is a very weird headline because the mob actually very specifically cares that they weren’t charged.
The 'Cornell 7' haven't been charged. The mob doesn't care |

What's most troubling in the Cornell

We can and indeed should show empathy to people's problems without necessarily accepting their diagnosis of what's driving those problems or their prescriptions for how to fix them. I empathise with a factory worker whose factory closed, but that doesn't mean I accept his 800% tariffs vision.

Something that gets easily forgotten is that providing humanitarian assistance to 2 million people in a dense urban area with good paved roads and decent water infrastructure, close to several modern container ports is actually quite easy. The problem wasn't logistics or funding. It was politics.

Much of 2020 felt like society was on the brink of collapse. It was utterly hellish times. But this is what I mean: people are in the grips of delusion. And like many delusions, this one is self-supporting, and people use false facts from inside the delusion to explain the seeming inconsistencies.

3000 people a day were dying from something that no one could see! We were trapped in our homes for more than a year. The president was telling people to drink bleach and doing deranged press conferences where he complained that people were exaggerating it to make him look bad. Also riots!

On some level it just drives me crazy that there are now years of empirical evidence that the US is somehow in the grips of a society-spanning delusion of perpetual crisis, a major contributor to its political implosion, but no one will talk about it because then you'd have to challenge the delusion

A great illustration of the way social media has essentially shredded society’s informational immune system: The USSR spent a fortune trying to spread conspiracy theories, without success because they couldn’t crack newsrooms. Today, you can reach the globe with a post that costs $20 to make.

Total private construction is about $1.6 TRILLION per year. Total data center construction is about $50 BILLION. So data centers are ~3% of all construction. There's no real crowding out here. Comparing total spending change from such RADICALLY different baserates tells us almost nothing.

People in the replies are ably demonstrating my point by writing “deanthropomorphized” descriptions of the Hugging Face attack that are oblique, evasive, obviously politicized, and ignore the actual details that would help a reader understand what happened. It’s just bad, unclear writing.

NYT has now independently corroborated all the major allegations against Susan Collins in the ProPublica report, including that investigators were prepared to move against her and then Trump intervened to shut it down. This put Trump in a position of exceptional and extortionate leverage over her.

People get this PRECISELY BACKWARDS: If people's opinions are formed from their lived experiences, those opinions *should* closely track the macroeconomic indicators. Because the macroeconomic indicators are the aggregate of people's lived experiences.

Part of why the sudden departure of mass opinion from macroeconomic indicators is unnerving is because it suggests the opposite: that people *are not* getting their opinions from lived experience, but from something else we can't measure so easily as wages or inflation.

Oh. That's a heck of a subsidy.
At MIT, Harvard, or any other school, supervising an undergraduate researcher is a lot of work, costs a lot of money, involves a lot of meetings, and the results are not reliably excellent. Asking Claude is easier, faster, and may produce better results. It’s also cheaper, which is no accident: Harvard allows every Harvard student and faculty member to request a Claude token budget of $2,500 per month, even as research funding is continuously threatened and the University lays off staff.
