The Appalachian Mountains are older than *bones.* Like, when they first formed, no creature on earth had evolved a skeleton yet. They're older than our current continents; the Scottish Highlands were once part of the Appalachian range, before the split.

The German-made printing presses they imported to England starting in the 15th century didn't have the letter thorn, so they decided the "y" looked enough like it. That's why "ye" is pronounced just like "the."

In the 1560s, the volcanic tropical island located in the South Atlantic Ocean, Saint Helena (left on the image), was in big trouble, when a sea monster with an experimental hairdo and twice as big as the island (right on the image), met spontaneously in the wide open sea. #skystorians
A detail from an old map of the 1560s, and you see an island named "S. Helena" and a big, big, sea monster appearing from the right. This is a printed scene from this map: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b550049478

So Prototaxites are not fungi (probably), not flora, and possibly not animalia, and were around more or less only in the Devonian... probably not aliens, but they are very much outside the major kingdoms of life as we know it. 🧪 Link: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
The CCA illustrates the correlation between informative spectral features and the fossils in the Rhynie chert.
The CCA uses the most informative ATR-FTIR absorption bands obtained after dimension reduction and feature selection (bands 1, 2, 7, and 10 to 12 in table S1, see Methods, Supplementary Text Extended Methods, and fig. S3). It shows strong correlation between the fossilization products of sugar-protein (amide I, II, N-products, and carboxylate) and Fungi, Arthropod, Oomycetes, and Amoebae. Bacteria show a strong correlation with aliphatic CHx moieties. On the other hand, P. taiti, and land plants, shows a negative correlation with all these products. The CCA supports the differences between the molecular composition of P. taiti and Fungi, and differences with the other fossils.

Wildlife tracking tips. A wintry comic from last year.
A six-panel comic titled "Wildlife Tracking Tips". In panel 1, the text says "A white-tailed deer traveled through here," and there are white-tailed deer prints in fresh snow. In panel 2, the text says "An American Red Squirrel came by," and the leap marks of a red squirrel are in the snow. In panel 3, the text says "A Snowshoe Hare passed through," and there are the distinctive fluffy-footed marks from a snowshoe hare jumping across the snow. n panel 4, the text says "The Snowshoe Hare found a sword," and one of the front paw marks in the track has been replaced with a long thin line running alongside the track. In panel 5, the text says "The Snowshoe Hare is dual wielding," and both front paw marks have been replaced with long thin lines. In panel 6, the text says "The Snowshoe Hare tamed a mount, vastly increasing its jumping distance. You should run," and the Snowshoe Hare trail runs into a deer track and disappears.

Image from a 1560s print (MEin Hertz freüdt sich allzeyt so sehr) that shows a Landsknecht posing originally with a drinking glass. The image has been enriched with a smartphone. You may have noticed most of the tropical activity this season has been “close to home” in the NW Atlantic / SE coast. That’s because this season the relative warmest water is there (deep red=record), not in the main development region. Thus, for now the focus remains close to the SE US coast.
