I am once again begging Hollywood to stop using the Greek alphabet for an Ancient World movie, if they can't afford to even throw a couple of quid at anyone with an inkling of the language. Unless they really think audiences are dying to see THS THDPSSSSPS

“Best practice” for who? Under what conditions, in what team structure, with what constraints? Answering those questions helps you adopt helpful wisdom from others vs. mindlessly adopting pablum. With AI slinging best practices your way all day every day you need judgment now more than ever.

I don't need a summary of what's available online, in biographies, or even in my own notes. I need to comb through and find the great details, decide what interests ME. No, it's not efficient. It's slow and painstaking. But I don't believe in efficiency as an ultimate good, especially in writing. /

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

if you generate it with AI but then sign off on every word and phrase, fine, whatever. i judge it by its content the problem with much AI content is it creates a nauseous feeling. like it's almost supposed to make sense but it doesn't. a blurry picture that never becomes sharp. sucky thinking

AI has actively made life worse for literally everyone - tech is now more expensive - you cannot trust most media of reality anymore - programs barely function - energy prices - literal psychosis - your voice can be literally stolen for evil - more spyware but hey, you can avoid paying an artist.

My cartoon for this week's @newscientist.com
Panel 1.
Scientist making a presentation to the board:
"We have developed an exciting new technology that will allow the company to make a much better product at no extra cost!"

Panel 2.
Board member 1: "Could we use this tech to make our current product more cheaply?"
Scientist: "In principle, yes.... And pass the savings on to consumers?"
Board member 2: "Haha. No."

Panel 3.
Board member 2: "How about we make a worse product, with a higher profit margin and just use the tech to make it seem exciting and new?"
Scientist: "Um..."

Panel 4.
Board members:
"I'll take that as a yes!"
"High five!!"
Scientist: "Sob!"

Every ad now
[Scene is a kitchen - a middle aged woman called JANET is boiling peas at the stove. A younger more colourfully dressed woman named LIZ approached her.]

JANET:
Ugh...

LIZ:
What's up?

JANET:
I am so bored of cooking peas!

LIZ:
Have you tried...

AI peas?

JANET:
AI peas?

LIZ:
They're peas with AI!

[Liz holds up to us a packet of peas labelled: Pea-i AI - Peas with AI].

LIZ:
Al-powered peas harness the potential of your peas

JANET:
What

LIZ [Now a voiceover as we cut to a whizzy technology diagram of peas all connected by meaningless dotted lines]

Why not take your peas to the next level with Al Peas' new Al tools to power your peas?

[Show a techno diagram of a pea with a label reading 'AI' pointing to a random zone in it]

LIZ:

Each pea has Al in a way we haven't quite worked out yet but it's fine

[Show Janet and Liz now in a Matrix-style world of peas]

LIZ:
With Al peas you can supercharge productivity and make AI work for your peas!

JANET:
What

LIZ:
Shut up

LIZ:
Our game-changing Pea-Al gives you the freedom to unlock the potential of the power of the future of your peas workflow

From opening the bag of peas

to boiling the peas

to eating the peas

To spending millions on adding Al to the peas and then having to work out what that even means.

JANET:
Is it really necessary to-

LIZ [Grabbing Janet by the collar]:
THE PEAS HAVE GOT AI, JANET

[Cut to an advert ending screen, with the bag of peas and the slogan:

AI PEAS: Just 'Peas' for god's sake buy the AI peas.

[Ends]

Call out to music creators on YouTube: don't use GenAI for your visuals. As a fellow artist, would you like to be replaced with an algorithm because someone else couldn't be bothered to reach out to you? If you are using GenAI for visual, why would I trust that music is made with your own effort?

Stop spreading this garbage about em dashes in ACTUAL EDITED PROSE OH MY GOD. Plenty of actual human beings know how to type em dashes! We’re called “writers” and “editors” — maybe you’ve heard of us?
Feline Feces (lib catturd)
@kitttenn.bsky.social

M dashes (the long dash) are a dead giveaway. LLMs love using them for some reason, while actual human beings have no idea how to type that into the computer.
They also love sets of three, overtly parallel structure, and impersonal writing.
