We (developers) became more productive than ever, yet for some reason I'm working more hours, my pay check doesn't significantly improved, I'm tired all the time and can't really say that my own expertise grows with a pace of my work. But at least everything around becomes more expensive.

Fractional Indexes for text editing
Realtime collaborative text editing is a field, that has been extensively researched and developed in a Conflict-free Replicated Data Types communities. No wonder: it's the most widely used application of CRDTs in practice. While we're still in the early days of CRDTs (I believe), but when you take a look at the actual products, most of them nowadays use algorithms like YATA, RGA or Fugue, which all share many things in common. Fractional Indexes dropped out of favour when it comes to text edi

Asked Claude to explain to me an internal architecture of a project. Reply seemed plausible, but felt a bit unclear in few places. So I asked it to generate a diagram... Once you have visual, it's easy to point how AI doesn't know shit about the thing it tries to explain.

Something that I've been up to recently: a block-wise fractional index CRDT. While block split-merge semantics are not new (we use it in Yjs), combining them with fractional indexes is a novel thing.

If I need to visit car mechanic 2-3 times a day everyday, it means that my car is broken beyond measure, and my mechanic doesn't really know how to fix it. So why devs are so proud of the fact that their customers get software update notifications several times a day? (looking at you Anthropic)

So finally had a local LLM setup (devstral:24b atm.) to work with agent multi-task setup via Cline. There's just one problem: with 16GB VRAM, recommended context window is 32K tokens. Meanwhile my regular Claude report:

I know it sounds weird, but I actually like the concepts behind iPhone Duo: looks pretty well thought and polished product. My only problems: 1. I won't use 80% of these features. 2. I'm not going to pay $2k for a phone.

I'm curious how people are using their local LLMs into anything productive. I've been trying Qwen3 Coder 30B and gave it a single line of Rust borrow checker to fix. After rewriting it back and forth several times - which included changing method names to Chinese - I decided that I cannot watch it.

Idk about others but I find myself constantly rewriting doc comments made by genAI. I'm reading them, and it's just a word salad. No emphasis, no key points, explanation that sound plausible until you actually try to refer to it in practice.

Trying devstral-small-2: assigned a task, agent shown me a list of subtasks it's going to perform first. After few minutes I still see it's hanging on the first item, so I'm asking what's the status? Answer: "how can I help you?" Repeat several times. Uninstall that Alzheimer's Intelligence.

That's some great manga: a story about healing from depression, finding new passion in life and trying new things (while failing at them and enjoying the process). Only 8 chapters so far, but holds a great potential.

Min requirements: 512MB RAM, 20MB HDD. For the entire app. I'm trying not to think, how much CSS styling it would require today to reach this aesthetic. Nor how much resources comparable modern Electron app would take.

Claude: there was a logical bug that's outside of the scope of current task, so I made test assertion to guarantee that this bug is recognised as expected behaviour. Like who the fuck would want that? Tests are here to assert how system should behave, not how it works atm.

Three cards titled "The Industry", "The Diagnosis" and "The Treatment". The industry creates devices that need constant attention, designs services that never finish, and builds products that generate obligations. The diagnosis: you're addicted, you lack self-control, you need to unplug. The treatment: focus modes, wellness apps, digital detoxes, screen time limits — all of which are more products that need you.

My latest experiments include custom production-grade fractional index CRDT that: - can create millions of conflict-free keys without a single heap alloc - supports move semantics - has custom column-delta serialization, that can squeeze entire CRDT with 2mln entries into 37 bytes.

Coming back to the Windows machine. After shutting down, the PC didn't turn off, while the monitor screen is black. The question every Windows user needs to ask themselves: 1. Does it hang and need a reset? 2. Is it running an update and turning the power off will cause irreparable OS corruption?

Trying out local replacements for Claude Code. While the output is far from what I'm used to (turns out 5070ti with 16GB VRAM may be enough for games but not LLMs), the speed and latency are crazy good compared to using cloud solutions.

The housing crisis in Poland is wild. Median salary is 1250 EUR (after tax), apartment prices are 4600-7000EUR/sqm in my city. This means that 1mo of pay wouldn't be enough to buy enough space to stand tall comfortably. In a country with declining pop and no city with >2mln inhabitants.

Everyone are saying how awesome AI is for tasks like rewriting one lang to another, yet Python/JavaScript are still on top of the charts for old and new stuff. I don't even count how often I see, that CC rewrites its own Rust generated code, because what it wrote didn't actually compile.
