Stede was saved from answering by a huge, feathery beast forcing itself between the two of them. Heading straight for the abandoned bowl of potatoes. He did what any man would do in this situation and screamed.
This led to Ed screaming, which in turn, somehow, led to the gull screaming. Ed spun around, throwing an arm out to shield Stede from the bird. He didn’t need to worry though, the gull was far too preoccupied eating the potatoes to be bothered by them. A few of its friends, watching from the roof of the tavern, realised there was food worth fighting for and swooped down to investigate.
Ed and Stede decided they were better off leaving the gulls to their squabbling and retreated back into the warmth of the tavern.

Hey, have a #WIPFriday (because I forgot to post it on Wednesday) for mine and @intheblanketfort.bsky.social’s upcoming #OFMDBigBang fic, based on the 1990’s movie, Pleasantville, where Ed and his foster brother Izzy get dropped into a 1950’s black-and-white sitcom.

Ed tears his gaze away long enough to scan the rest of the room. Where the fuck is Lucius, anyway? He doesn't see him. Or Pete, for that matter.
Ed's mouth curls into a grin. Huh. Maybe they've already disappeared somewhere together. Maybe Lucius actually took Ed's advice.
Maybe they're kissing right now.
Fuck, Ed hopes so. He really fucking hopes so.
Ed heads farther into the room, making his way toward the table of food. He's got to get his head in the game if he's going to figure out how to pull Stede away from the party for a bit.
To his relief, Izzy wanders off in the opposite direction, joining a few of the college students Ed recognizes from whenever Dennis was at school on the show.
There's the bloke everyone only ever calls the Swede, whose actual name Ed isn't entirely sure was mentioned once in eight fucking seasons.
Frenchie, another regular fixture around campus.
And Wee John, a ridiculously tall, broad man whose nickname Ed had always assumed was meant to be ironic.
Izzy seems comfortable enough with them, anyway.
Ed figures he must've gotten to know them better over the last few days. They'd appeared in the background of enough of Dennis's college scenes that Ed knows they share at least a few classes.
Good. Maybe Izzy will actually loosen up for once.
He deserves to find some happiness.
Ed turns his attention to the food. He plucks a deviled egg from one of the platters and takes a bite, eyes shifting to Stede every now and then, who still doesn't seem to have noticed him yet.
Oh. Fuck, that's good.

He closes his eyes for half a second, savoring the creamy filling. Okay, maybe 1950s party food gets more shit than it deserves. Ed loves a good deviled egg.
He pops the rest into his mouth-And nearly fucking chokes.
Something on the table catches his eye. Ed freezes. What-?
Nestled between a bowl of grapes and a platter of tiny sandwiches is a narrow, tapered vase.
And inside that vase is a rose.
A red rose.
Not gray. Not a shade that Ed knows intellectually is supposed to be red, the way he knows his Buick is supposedly purple and Stede's hair is supposedly blond.
Red.
Actual fucking red.
For three days, Ed has seen nothing but black, white, and every conceivable shade of gray in between.
And suddenly there's color.
Bright, vivid, impossibly rich red, so intense against the monochrome room that it almost seems to glow.
Ed stares at it. His heart starts pounding.
Because holy shit.
He looks around quickly. Nobody else seems to have noticed.
Oluwande is talking to someone near the doorway.
Jim and Stede are still deep in conversation. Izzy has his back turned, thankfully, listening to something Frenchie is saying.

Nobody is looking at the rose. Does nobody else fucking see it?
Ed looks back. Still red. Definitely fucking red.
And then panic hits him. Oh, shit. Did he do this?
His conversation with Izzy in the car flashes through his mind.
You have no idea what happens if we start changing things here!
Fuck. If Izzy sees this, Ed will never hear the end of it. Actually, Izzy might fucking kill him.
Without thinking, Ed snatches the rose from the vase.
He glances around again, spots a sideboard nearby, and crosses to it as casually as someone can while attempting to conceal evidence of a possible rupture in the fabric of reality.
He yanks open a drawer, shoves the rose inside, and closes it.
There. Gone.
Ed stands in front of the sideboard, breathing a little too quickly. Shit. How the fuck did that happen? More importantly-Why?
He scans the room again, his eyes darting from one object to another. Clothes. Food. Flowers.
Furniture. Faces.
Black and white.
Black and white.
Black and white.
Nothing.
Everything else looks exactly the same as it has since he arrived. Ed releases a breath. Thank fuck. Maybe it was just the rose.

Ed's not even sure that he'll be able to sleep knowing Stede's right there, but he closes his eyes and listens to the sounds of the waves lapping
against the hull. Against all odds he's just starting to drift when Stede whispers into the darkness.
"Ed?"
"Yeah, mate," Ed mumbles back.
"The whole time?"
It takes Ed a minute to grasp what he's asking.
For his mind to trip back through the evening to their earlier conversation.
I can't believe you were reading these and you still didn't realise / was flirting with you the whole time.
"Yep," Ed sighs. "Thought I was being pretty
fucking obvious actually. Kinda insulting."
"God," Stede sighs too. "I'm such an idiot."

Ed doesn't say anything because, yeah.
"I'm so sorry, Ed," Stede murmurs into the darkness. "I wish I'd known. I wish I'd been paying more attention. I feel like I've missed so much."
Ed hates it. Hates how sad Stede sounds, like he's missed his chance. Because he hasn't. That's why Ed is still here, isn't it? Yes, he's hurt and his anger hasn't fully gone away, but he stil... It's not like Ed wants Stede to leave again. And Ed certainly doesn't want to leave, even if the crew all hate him. He wants this. More than he's ever wanted anything, probably.
"Well," Ed starts. He takes a deep breath.
"Maybe you'll notice next time."
Stede's quiet for a moment before he murmurs
"Next time?"
"Yeah. Maybe."
Ed can practically hear Stede's smile. Feels like
the dark in the cabin gets significantly lighter because of it.
"I hope so,
" Stede breathes.
