Wip Wednesday! Treating myself to some low plot, self-indulgent, omega verse Stede whump/hc. @tabbystardust.bsky.social has been kind enough to do some art for it! 😭💖 Sweet scene between alpha 'Jeff' and omega 'Thomas', simple sky cruise workers. Certainly no one undercover or on the run here...👀

Thomas sighed, leaving his plate half-eaten to stare out at the sky. He leaned forward, crossing his arms over the railing and resting his weight against it. The warm line of him pressed against Ed's side. This close Ed could pick out more of his scent. Found a grassier note hidden in the floral, pitch sharp.

Exhaustion.

He gently knocked his shoulder against Thomas's. "Hey. You okay?"

Thomas blinked slowly. "Just tired." He straightened up with visible effort and took another forkful of runny potato and beans.

"Not surprised." Ed nudged his foot against his. "No more double shifts, yeah? Do you need the money that bad?"

"Mm? No, it's not that." Thomas gave him an unconvincing smile. "I volunteered for it. It's nice to be needed. To be helpful, ha." His shoulders slumped. "Imagine that."

Ed did not much like the bitter note of self-depreciation in Thomas's voice. Didn't like it at all, actually. Fuck that. "Okay. First of all, you're wrong." Thomas huffed. Ed kept on. "And second, have you considered you'll not be helping anyone if you burn yourself out?"

Thomas looked down at their dangling feet, and the shifting waves passing far, far below them. "To be honest, I wasn't going to get any sleep last night. Not with the, the party and all. The new people onboard." A look of anxious fear crossed his face, nearly too quick to catch. Ed was faster. "Better I was working, instead of tossing and turning," continued Thomas. "Someone has to fold all those linens!"

"Sure." Ed watched him. "Wouldn't you like a better position? Something above deck, maybe? Could be a waiter? Dining host, even. Something with fresh air and pretty views and all." He nuged his shoulder against Thomas's. "Get to people watch and judge the fuck out of all the terrible outfits, yeah? Very fun, would reccomend."

Thomas gave a nervous glance up towards the bulk of the ship. A burst of laughter and music drifted down to them from the upper, classier decks. "Ah, no." Again, that fear. "Ha. I mean." He smiled unconvincingly. "I'm really only good at towels."

"Hey, fuck off." Ed nudged him again, frowning. "You're brilliant. Cheerful and creative, and! And you're good with people."

Thomas looked at him. "No, that's you Jeff. You're brilliant! I've never met anyone with your knack for picking things up so quickly!" He gave a real smile then, eyes warm. "It feels like every day you're doing something new."

That was because 'Jeff' wasn't formally registered on the ship. Knew how to put enough money in the right hands and how to apply just the right amount of pressure so that no one would ask any questions. He was even doing the jobs, did them very well, thank you! So what was the harm?

"I mean, yeah," admitted Ed. "I am pretty great, actually."

Thomas nodded, eyes wide. "You are! You could be captain if you wanted to, I'm sure of it!"

Ed ducked his head, grinning bashfully. He was a captain. Had been for nearly two decades now, and didn't that make him feel fucking old. "Augh. Thanks. You know me." Ed winked. "Good old Jeff is just happy doing his little tasks."

"I think you could do anything." Thomas nudged him. "But I am very glad you're here, Jeff. Doing tasks with me."

"Yeah," Ed breathed. He smiled. Had never smiled so much in his life before meeting Thomas, now he couldn't stop doing it at him to save his life. "Me too."
