He turned off that road onto a dirt road, then turned off again onto what could barely be called a path. Then the trees grew denser and he had to pull over and go out on foot, only the torch from his phone to help guide him.

Ed had said he was going for a walk, but that could mean anything. His stupid little walks for his stupid mental health (his words) had evolved over time from marching into town and hating every step to outright hikes in the forest. The man had gone so far as to drag Stede on walking holidays, climbing up and down endless coastline until Stede was the one to say fuck nature and go back to the hotel. Ed loved it so much, he just went out on a whim, letting Stede know where he was going and making sure his location was visible for Stede to find. It just so happened Stede was at work that day and didn't check his phone until the last location ping was five hours ago.

And now search parties and rescue helicopters and police dogs had failed them and Stede could only run on adrenaline for so long. So he wanted to try one last spot. Ed had dragged him there once, telling him it was the best place on earth, and even though it was a fairly ordinary cleaning in a painfully bogstandard woodland, it meant something to Ed so it meant something to Stede.

Sometimes a book you read as a teenager traumatises you and then 20 years later you whump your blorbo with it

Stede looked at his arm, trapped between the boulder and the canyon wall. Well and truly wedged in. He couldn't even feel it, which was probably a blessing. He thought about the fact he didn't tell anyone where he was going, other than he was going to check out the national park. No one knew which canyon he was in, or when to expect him home. So utterly stupid. He wasn't a canyoneer, he was an idiot!

Stede inventoried his belongings. Water, check. Rope, check. Multi-tool penknife, check. Camera, check. Spare battery, check. Phone, check. Phone signal? Nothing. Not surprising considering he was in a slot canyon with twenty meter high walls. Food? Check.

Well, water and food to last him the day, anyway. He hadn't exactly prepared to become completely and utterly stuck with no hope of escape.

Stede had come up, having seen what he was doing and, between the switching off of the lamp and the lighting of the candles, he’d shed his underwear.

Ed rushed to match him and then, before either of them could overthink it, he dropped onto his bed and drew Stede back onto his lap. Kissed him thoroughly, until he had a lapful of naked, whimpering Stede and no thoughts or plans or tactics left in his mind.

The noise didn’t register for Ed at first, so he kept running.

Crack. CRACK.

“Shit!” He yelled, suddenly remembering that he was running across the pond and becoming aware of the ice cracking underneath his weight.

“Ed! Stop!” Stede shrieked, but it was too late.

Crack crack crack!

He managed to spin around and take one last look at Stede before he was plunged into the dark, icy depths. It felt like he was being stabbed with a thousand knives as the freezing water engulfed him. He was a strong swimmer, but the cold completely knocked the wind out of him and he began to panic.

“Stede!” He cried out as he flailed around, unable to orient himself as he felt his body being sucked downward.

Summary:
Ed can be forgetful sometimes, Stede’s learnt that over the past few months. He doesn’t remember a lot of what happened in the time they were apart, which is understandable, as it must’ve been a very grisly time up in that head of his, and he often gets people’s names mixed up, but he remembers the important things. Like “you wear fine things well”, and how much butter Stede likes on his toast, and that Stede loves him.

He always remembers that Stede loves him.
