The logo for Pete Hegseth's new Project Meridian shows a sword that extends from one pole to the other. In order to be a Meridian, that sword would have to follow a line from one pole to the other ON THE SURFACE, and be uselessly bent. If this sword is an effective weapon it must be: an Axis Power.

The reason I never made a Facebook account is that ~20 years ago they suddenly created a system to spy on their users' purchases elseweb and then, without asking, run ads to the user's friends saying "(user) bought this, you should too" and that freaked me the fuck out. This is so much worse.

I realized something about Trump's sniper obsession. People assume it's a reaction to the Butler assassination attempt, which was stopped by a sniper - but maybe there's a hidden hand at play here: what if Mark Penn is subtly working to restore the reputation that Ezra Klein so memorably destroyed?
A paragraph from maybe the best work Ezra Klein ever did, his 2007 defenestration of Mark Penn's book "Microtrends", which Klein published in "In These Times" the year before Mark Penn was the chief strategist and pollster for Hillary Clinton's campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, a role in which Penn was widely blamed for basic errors made from ignorance and arrogance that contributed to Clinton's unexpectedly losing the nomination.

The whole thing is worth a read, there's a link at the bottom.

This one paragraph, transcribed:

This isn’t an isolated example. In a chapter called “Aspiring Snipers,” Penn explains, “It’s the rare moment when a poll stops me in my tracks and reorients my understanding of things.” One such poll was conducted last fall, when Bendixen and Associates asked 601 young Californians what they’d be doing in 10 years. About 1 percent – so, a handful – said they’d be snipers. Certainly, that’s an odd reply. But Penn never mentions that the Bendixen poll had a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4 percent–four being a larger number than one. Additionally, it’s meaningless without further study. Anyone in the age bracket would attribute it to video games, or snipers being, let’s admit it, quite cool. Yet Penn, based on no follow-up interviews, detects a “new patriotism,” and a desire “to master complex mathematical formulas like how distance or wind might affect the path of the bullet.” This simply isn’t professional work. (It is bitter, though. Penn concludes the chapter by complaining, “Ask anyone in politics and they will agree – they face ‘snipers’ every day who are trying to find one flinch, one out-of-place word to put on Drudge or YouTube.” It takes a special sort of self-regard to compare the danger of being embedded on YouTube to being hunted down in urban warfare.)

I have NEVER, in more than a decade in this field, heard of the Board of Immigration Appeals deciding a complex case like this in 24 hours. And neither has Charles Adkins-Blanch, who served on the Board for two decades, and knows its processes inside and out. This whole thing STINKS to high heaven.
Immigration judges work for the Justice Department, not the independent judicial branch, meaning they can be hired and fired by administration officials. By law they are required to decide cases using their “independent judgment and discretion.”
Former appellate immigration judges said that even if the Serrano case had been fast-tracked, a complex appeal like his would normally have taken weeks to decide, not a single day.
“I can’t recall a case ever moving that quickly,” said Charles Adkins-Blanch, who was appointed to the immigration appeals board under President George W. Bush and later served as its vice chairman. “It’s highly unusual.”

For many years, ICE didn't have its own medical claims processing for detainees, running 3rd party medical bills through the VA's system. Last year, right-wing influencers convinced the Trump admin to abruptly cancel this contract. With no replacement, ICE specialized medical care has gone unpaid.
ICE has not paid any of its providers for detainees’ care since Oct. 3, 2025, according to agency regulatory filings and the ICE website. In an internal directive issued shortly after, obtained by the Chronicle and not previously reported, ICE declared “emergency operations,” sharply limiting offsite medical care and access to medication.

Hospitals and ambulance services told the Chronicle they are owed millions of dollars, while many detainees have had appointments for lifesaving medical care delayed or canceled. Medical providers say they have continued to provide care out of moral obligation, although some observers worry that fear of nonpayment could deter them from offering services to detainees.

Yet another issue where every single person who touched it needs to end up in jail for us to have any semblance of the rule of law. You cannot have a functional democracy where the government creates a plan to literally throw away votes from places that don't support the incumbent party.

A friend found this clipping in some old files. Haven't seen this before. Mind blown.
Color political cartoon by Danny Hellman from the New York Press dated October 6-12, 1999. In it, Donald Trump and his then wife Marla Maples being shown a model of the White House with many added stories and a shiny gold T on the top, with Taj Mahal towers on the side and flags flying with a T. It is labeled "Proposed White House Renovation." A ghoulish Philip Johnson says, "Granted, It's in violation of several of Washington D.C.'s landmark and zoning codes. But of course as president of the United States..." Trump, licking his lips, says, "It's tremendous, Philip, when do I move in?" The caption beneath is Spectacularly unqualified egomaniac Donald Trump contemplates a White House run"

Happened to be walking past the local student bar right before Germany scored the winning goal
A crowd of people clustered together around the outside seating area of a bar and dance club in the middle of a cluster of giant student dormitories, with a large projection screen showing the game visible in the background. A big German flag being carried by one of the spectators is in the foreground.
