I bought a six-pack of donuts when a guy next to me said, "You shouldn't eat donuts." I replied, "My grandparents parents lived to be 100." He asked, "Did they eat donuts?" I shot back, "No, they minded their own fkn business."

I’ve recently realized that as a woman who grew up in the 70’s, I’m not sure women my age even know what consent is. We were expected to resist, and boys expected to, at a minimum, badger us into it. So I don’t think we knew whether we wanted sex or not. It was super confusing.

This mass surveillance tech is unconstitutional even if it’s used “properly.” Unsurprisingly, though, it’s often abused. Here’s our tracker of just the reported incidents of ALPR abuse: ij.org/the-ij-datab...

Shame on the NYT for describing the Trump admin withholding $1.4 BILLION in allocated research funds as a “creative way to work around Congress.” This is not creative, it’s open defiance of Congress and is doing immense damage to “basic” science research.

Some National Science Foundation divisions pulled back research proposals in order to comply with White House guidance to carry over funds. Alex Kent/The New York Times

The National Science Foundation, one of the biggest sources of federal research funding, withheld $1.4 billion that Congress had intended for research over the course of the past year, according to internal data reviewed by The New York Times.
The extraordinary move - holding back about one-fifth of the N.S.E's primary research budget — is the latest sign of how the Trump administration is finding creative ways to work around Congress.
Lawmakers from both parties have consistently opposed White House-led proposals to cut funding to major science agencies, including the N.S.F. and the

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if between November and January Republicans front-load as much funding to ICE and DOD as they possibly can so there's nothing for Democrats to challenge. The fact of the matter is that Trump will still have a veto, and it takes more votes to override than remove.

What is Hosha'na Rabba? A thread of indeterminate length. Before we begin, a forewarning: I would like to avoid being the XKCD expert familiarity guy, so if there is anything I bring up which you do not understand and would like to, feel free to ask. It's a weird day with a lot going on
"Hoshana Rabba is second nature to us liturgists, so it's easy to forget that the average person probably only knows Kol Mevasser and the Yamim Noraim additions."
"And cabbage, of course."
"Of course."

Even when they're trying to compensate for it, experts in anything wildly overestimate the average person's familiarity with their field.

If we need to jump through all these hoops to convince ourselves that it’s okay…it’s probably not okay. But don’t call it lethal injection, call it strapping a person to a table, sedating them and then watching them in a state of unconsciousness struggle and suffocate. That’s torture not justice.

I do not unilaterally oppose the death penalty in theory-world! I do believe there can be people who can never rehabilitate (although it's not like our prison system tries). But the bias and error in the criminal justice system can never be reduced far enough for me to support it in reality.

We can learn from our queer elders 🫶🏻

when my masc lesbian aunt died, women just kept coming, screaming, crying, and saying they were her wives. Eventually we just had to start telling them to join the others. They were all devastated to learn about each other. Except for one who came in, kissed her dead mouth and showed us all that they had matching tattoos. She actually won all the mourning wives over and they all agreed she was the wife. It was so weird.Did not expect more than a few people to see this but yes it really happened, yes it was insane
