The day the US gov't announced it would rather announce winners & losers than let the market punish bad behavior, or regulate out the fundamental problems, investors knew the bigger they were the more likely they were to win. There is a direct line between the bailout and AI investment patterns

Oh no! There's a silly little data centre in my studio 🙀
A raspberry pi zero and a solar powered battery pack inside a mason jar, on a shelfA lo fi white window on a blue desktop background in a browser window. Inside is some slightly corrupted text that more or less reads "Hello. I am a silly little data centre. Sometimes i forget things. Oh well."

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

This is a joke, obviously, the concept of "infinite personalised music" is such a deeply inhuman thought to even have. Part of what makes music music is that you learn it and know it and repeat it and do your own versions of it. There are albums I must have listened to hundreds of times over.

"Kill all humans" by @leninology.bsky.social. www.patreon.com/richardseymo...
Tech fetishism, the ascription of human agentive powers to machinery, is always a political act. It obscures that the goals, the purposes, embodied in any technology are human purposes; more specifically, that they are the automated purposes of a minute subset of humanity, a class fraction, the twisted, ruthless, ketamined, indoctrinated, emotionally stunted moral nullities that rule Silicon Valley like child-kings, have made themselves the bearers of myriad impossible hopes, and have now bought their way into the Trump court. It says, that’s just how the technology works, it’s a capricious demigod which can either shower us with riches or have us all killed, we must appease it and ensnare it, we must fear it and cherish it, but what we mustn’t ever do is stop throwing money at it, or stop genuflecting to it, or begin to think: this is nothing but our own alienated collective power turned against us by cut-throat capitalists, and in making us the servants of their technology, they try to make us their slaves. Because that, my friends, is Luddism. And I trust you know what that unfortunate incident led to
