A new episode of The Savage Beast is here! We're adding another classic to the 'Savage Best' canon, with Stuart Gordon's pitch black comedy of social precarity 'Stuck' from 2007, as well as looking back at the director's splendidly perverse filmography. thesavagebeast.podbean.com/e/s210-savag...

It's a sad irony that the cold which is stopping me being able to record this week's podcast is also making my voice sound so husky and sexy.

I've been meaning to draw this for ages.

My own re-drawing of a famous Batman panel from the comics. In 1939, a brief, page-long origin story for Batman was printed, the most famous panel of which is Bruce Wayne sat near an open window at night when a bat flies in. He has been trying to think of a way to frighten criminals and takes this as a sign. In the updated (and definitive) 80s version of the story, this is when Wayne utters the fabulous and mental line: "Yes father, I shall become a bat."
Anyway. *This* is my version. I have tried to draw the panel more or less the same as the original and in the same style. Bruce Wayne turns to look out of the window and a bat flies in. Panicked, he shouts (via word bubble) "MY GOD! SOME KIND OF DEVIL BIRD! ALFRED! QUICKLY! STRANGLE IT! JUMP ON ITS FACE! ALFRED!"

The divvies behind 'Troll 2' unleash this abomination, wherein a group of mercs (and Jeff Stryker) have their guts handed to them by the mutated denizens of a tropical island to a soundtrack of ghastly soft rock. For completists only? Rubbish! Your mum would love this if she was on the right drugs.

If you do one thing this weekend, go and see this absolute barn burner. If you dig the films of Walter Hill, Friedkin's 'Sorcerer' and the kind of 'Desperate men on a desperate mission' movies that they just don't make anymore, then get yourself to the cinema so they'll make more of them. Brilliant.

A ridiculous mash up of James Bond, Shogun and a haunted GI Joe cartoon, in which a man who looks like what your dad thinks he looks like sets off in pursuit of gold accompanied by his simian sidekick. Ninjas! Baboons! Pensioners being fed to piranhas! More ninjas! Movies are wonderful aren't they?

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...

A casual Star Wars alien fella at the cantina, in a sun faded, reddish photo. Someone will be mad at me for not knowing who this is.

Phil, a balding Caucasian man, poses a model of the garthok, an antagonist from the Coneheads movie.

Phil, a balding caucasian man, points at some CG on a CRT computer monitor, as a younger man looks on. The screen shows a model of a dinosaur attacking a jeep, while there's an actual physical model of that event in the foreground for reference.

an isolated shot of a star wars vehicle. Sorry, I don't know star wars lol

Sam Raimi blended Universal monster angst with pulp avenger archetypes and came out swinging with this masterpiece, showcasing great practical effects, a never-better Liam Neeson (who understands his assignment totally) and a director at the peak of his antic powers. Still the best superhero movie.

Starts as a chest bursting 'Alien' rip off before morphing into a warped James Bond riff (complete with island base) in its back half, 'Contamination' is mostly known for it's gory bona fides, but it's a late night, low-rent treat, and features the best Goblin score outside of the Argento films.

Eerie and slow, its dread filled atmosphere compounded by a buzzing synth score, 'Shock Waves' feels more like a European effort than other American ghoul flicks of the era, as a horde of nazi super soldiers rise from their watery tombs to avenge themselves on their maker. A dronecore classic.

Borderline avant-garde outsider slasher that mines a seam of lunacy found between Maya Deren and 'Prom Night', in which a family vacation turns bloodbath when a woman's orgasms start manifesting a supernatural killer who inexplicably is also a samurai. And it's a Christmas movie. Totally demented.

Grime-streaked but with a heart of gold, director Jamaa Fanaka takes a hoary 'wronged-man-boxes-his-way-to-freedom' premise and lights it up with gritty humour and sharp edged poeticism, creating one of the most remarkable debuts of the exploitation era. A livid, combustible masterpiece.

Based on a Stephen King script clearly written during bouts of mania, 'Sleepwalkers' never belies the insanity of its source material, as dispossessed vampire cat gods unleash a merry hell of virgin baiting, cop skewering, incest and bad CGI, in what is surely THE great American film of the 1990s.

Boiling the essence of European exploitation cinema into an abstract barrage of gunfire, sunshine, leather and sex, 'Let the Corpses Tan' is the ultimate pulp fetish object, prioritising sensation over plot, allowing the viewer to luxuriate in the film's miasma of sudden violence and scorching heat.
