I've been working on this for a little while. I'm pleased with it but really didn't enjoy working with the silver thread around the border. (Pictures traced from an annual onto wash away guide paper - I'm not very good at drawing things myself)

We take it for granted but The Wombles thing is really weird. They never formed a band, or played musical instruments in the books or TV show IIRC. It's like if the Clangers or Dougal from The Magic Roundabout put out records and now I wish they had because they would've been excellent.

I love the Wombles books! Orinoco being swept away still holding on to the umbrella he had collected before falling into Queen’s Mere and being rescued by Bungo, is one of the funniest things I have ever encountered!

This title montage was used to open the 16 February 1980 edition of Swap Shop which used title sets from earlier series and replaced the usual series 4 title style. This used the earlier version of the Mike Batt theme opening with the guitar riff rather than the second version with the drum roll.

Municipal guide of the day: the London Borough of Merton from the mid-70s, with the PR department working overtime to shoehorn the contents into a MERTON mnemonic. This also features some of Merton’s distinctive low rise social housing from the era. Oh, and Wombles.
The cover is orange which has faded at the edge to yellow. The word “Merton” is written in a black modern sans serif typeface repeatedly on the diagonal.

I met the Wombles c1973 ish in Sheffield. They were opening a shop called the Young Rascals. I was shocked that they seemed to be 7ft tall. (not the rabbit sized creatures that I’d imagined) I’m still a Womble admirer and advocate and just today I found good use of things that I found. Wombler 😊

How long do Wombles live? According to Minuetto Allegretto, in 1780 Great Uncle Bulgaria was a lad, so let’s say he must have been a minimum of 12. By 1974, he would have been 206, and still going strong. And why are there no parents around? Where are they? They never tell you this stuff do they?
Does this Womble look 206 to you?

Okay, so can we have a proper adaptation of the books, please? Nothing against the '70s series which is brilliant but the books have great stories. In the first one alone there's a landslide and then later they're forced to ration their food due to the bad weather.

I was shocked this week to find that my Gen Z colleagues haven't heard of those pioneering upcyclers and environmentalists, The Wombles. "Books by Elizabeth Beresford?", I prompted. Blank stares. I hummed the TV show tune. Still nothing. "Wimbledon Common?" I said to the Brit. "Huh?" he said. Sigh.

A mall orange figurine carved from amber, with a long snout, facing right. Officially it is a bear, but it has the distinctive whiff of Bungo to us.
