As well as mum, it was lovely to catch up with my niece, Kira and nephew, Avery and his partner, Molly at the weekend birthday bash for mum. As well as being a smashing lad and a very good non-league goalkeeper, most importantly, he’s a bloody good cake maker ☺️
With my niece, Kira ❤️With Molly and Avery ❤️Avery and Molly. Star baker ⭐️🎂

Me and Mike with mum for her 84th birthday celebrations at the weekend. As you can see, neither of us checked what colour shirt we’d be wearing 🙃

Top 3 tinned soups: (no particular order) Scotch Broth Potato & Leek Oxtail Feel free to suggest alternatives. Obviously, I’ll tut and roll my eyes a bit but reply with something like “oh yes, that’s a nice one too” while secretly thinking “are you fucking joking!?” I’m sure you’ll understand.
Three tins of soup lined up:

Scotch Broth
Potato and Leek
Oxtail

Hello, I'd like to read you 'Stig of the Dump' by Clive King for Jackanory. Unfortunately, I can't do that because Jackanory finished in 1996 and I don't own that book. Bye.

Two of my favourite pics of mum, Patricia. One with her sister, Joan, proper pint glass in hand and the other, kicking back with a fag on the go. She hasn’t changed much, other than packing in the cigs 30 years ago and replacing the pint with a G&T.

My primary school, the brilliant Howe Dell. Can't overstate how great it was. In fact, it was SO great, they sold it and turned it into private flats. The twats. I'd love to re-visit but I can't, unless I say balls to them and scale the fence. Not that I did that, of course 😊

By skilful use of angles, mirrors and trick photography, I was able to take a photo of these flats in Hatfield with my head appearing to be even bigger than the flats! Also, I am SO glad I trimmed my nasal hairs last week 🙌

Here are some people attempting to hit one of those little white balls onto that MASSIVE flat green bit over the water. There was even a flag showing them where to put it. In spite of my efforts to provide morale-boosting encouragement, their efforts met with mixed success.

We finished our walk with a drink in the lovely Crooked Chimney pub. Originally a farmhouse called Hornbeam Hall dating back to the 1750s when it was called The Chequers. It was renamed The Crooked Chimney in 1968 after its distinctive crooked brick chimney.

There is a smashing old mill where the River Lea runs through Lemsford. The Lea originates in the Chiltern Hills, flows SE through Hertfordshire to Greater London, to meet the River Thames at Bow Creek. It is one of the largest rivers in London and a major tributary of the Thames.

We had a lovely day for it 🌞 Turns out, this was also a lovely day for golf which, given that Brocket Hall is on TWO golf courses, meant you had to keep your eyes open for little white balls whizzing about and ears open for shouts of "four!", "sorry!" and "shiiiiiit!!!".

Brocket Hall is Grade I listed. The estate includes TWO golf courses and seven smaller listed buildings, apart from the main house. Two golf courses is just being greedy, if you ask me. The pathway literally goes straight through it.........

Stevie Kilner @handle.invalid · 02/10/2026
Here's me and the old man outside the rear of Brocket Hall with a green from one of the two golf courses behind us. You can't go right up to the house. It's part of a private estate that hosts corporate events and posh do's. Us peasants have to stick to the pathways and bow as we shuffle past 😊

The current Brocket Hall was completed c1769 and eventually inherited by William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne and Queen Victoria's first PM. They were said to be "very close" and she often visited during this period. Lord Melbourne's wife, Lady Caroline Lamb had a scandalous affair with Lord Byron.

Next to the weir is a neoclassical Palladian-style bridge, which carries a road across the river Lea. It is faced in Portland stone and was designed by some fella called Paine. Always thought be made windows 🤔 You get smashing views of the hall from it and the golf course, not that you'd want those.

Very pleasant morning stroll around the grounds of Brocket Hall with mum and dad today. Brocket Hall is a neo-classical country house, built in the 1760s, located near the modern town of Welwyn Garden City. The River Lea was damned to form a broadwater in front of the house.

“There was a young man from Swaffham Who took off his balls to wash ‘em His mum said Listen here, Jack If you don’t put them back I’ll get out a hammer and squash ‘em” As a 7-8 year old, am I right in saying the above limerick was the very first we heard?

I’ve been to Wetherspoons (I refuse to call them ‘Spoons’ as a matter of principle) for lunch with mum and dad. Mother appreciates the value afforded by their “lunch club” menu and dad enjoys the generous parking bays. I’ll say one thing - Wethers bloody LOVE a beer festival!

I was just a kid as Esther Rantzen and That's Life became a TV institution. It honoured the tradition of balancing the frivolous & silly with the serious & campaigning. A Sunday night treat before the horrors of school. Childline mattered. As did you, Esther. Rest in Peace ❤️

I’m heading south to leafy Hertfordshire on Thursday to visit the folks as it’s mum’s birthday on Saturday. I am at a complete loose end on Friday. I’m probably going to end in a café in St Albans, people watching or wandering around the cathedral, for the 20th time.
