two "fun" things about this: 1) CA dems have supermajorities in both houses & the bills passed by overwhelming margins 2) the CA legislature hasn't overridden a gubernatorial veto since 1980

Just gonna highlight this one as it's very specifically annoying to me. Making something more aerodynamic is the closest thing to free money in transportation. Every penny saved by not powering through drag can be spent improving performance elsewhere, or just go straight into your pocket.

On the bright side, I'm not sure my octogenarian dad ever fully figured out his position on trans equality but it's now largely irrelevant as he just randomly assigns pronouns whenever he speaks.

ICE has notified me that another person has died in their custody. This is the 58th death under ICE’s watch since Trump returned to office. That’s 58 too many. We need to dismantle ICE, eliminate private, for-profit detention centers, and reform our broken immigration system.

When I say John Roberts is a liar, hack, anti-democracy ideologue, and enemy of the Constitution, I do so in a civil manner. No yelling or cursing here. But since he will be remembered as an utter disgrace who tried to destroy the republic but failed, some in the future might say it less civilly.

there are moral arguments against the death penalty in its ideal form but in real life you never need to get there. the prior question is "can the state be trusted to end the life only of the rightly convicted without torture?" and the answer is no

Once again for the people in the back: The mental health crisis in aviation is not pilots with depression, suicidal ideation, or garden variety ADD/ADHD. The crisis is that even acknowledging these things in a medical setting--let alone seeking treatment--can* be career-ending.

Not for nothing, but "super intelligence" already has a definition and while it is, of course, possible for words to have multiple meanings, it tends not to work well if they don't evolve through natural usage over time.

Important 🧵 Aside: one of the most infuriating crutches in storytelling (especially in manga/anime where it's epidemic) is establishing a character as a Good Guy by having him prevent/break-up a rape. You (author) still chose to write a rape scenario. The hero could have just pet a dog.

A fun thing to do in 2029 would be for the new Congress and President to pass a bill saying, "We did not stutter, this is fucking illegal, has been for decades, and the Supreme Court has no jurisdiction in this determination. The DoJ will be prosecuting, including past offenses."

I would love to see AOC succeed/unseat Schumer. Long-term it might be the best outcome... ...IF the Democrats can find a torchbearer as charismatic, smart, and ready and willing as President to lead the radical reform necessary to save our democracy starting Jan 20th, 2029.

I like to think of "Choosin' Texas" the way I do a lost text. I quite enjoy reading commentary about it. And commentary about commentary about it. But I don't terribly care for the purported snippets of the song I've encountered, and I'm not totally convinced the source material actually exists.

Forecast regarding soon-to-be major Hurricane Nolo (not to be confused w/current major Hurricane Polo) has become increasingly alarming. A close approach on Sat could bring extreme rainfall (>30 inches) to Big Island, w/risk of widespread & severe flash flooding & damaging winds.
Graphic from NOAA (National Hurricane Center) showing preliminary forecast rainfall amounts on Hawaiian Island chain due to Hurricane Nolo. Widespread rainfall totals of 15-30 inches are depicted on the Big Island, with a local maximum exceeding 35 inches and notation regarding the risk of catastrophic flash flooding. Other islands are show as having risk of very heavy, though somewhat lesser, precipitation.

This is, of course, dumb and also possible under existing NATO agreements but my biggest question is: With what money? Arctic bases are incredibly expensive to build/rebuild, staff, and maintain. The Pentagon doesn't *actually* have infinite money and it has... several other obligations.

The government moving or hiding jailed people to avoid review by courts isn't some loophole in our habeas corpus rights. This government behavior has been considered a violation of the people's habeas corpus rights since at least the Habeas Corpus Act of 1679. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habeas_...
Jailors were forbidden to move prisoners from one prison to another or out of the country to evade the writ. In case of disobedience jailers would be punished with severe fines which had to be paid to the prisoner.[5][6]

Europeans dunking on US gas prices: By all means get your licks in. But please keep in mind that the US economy, transportation networks, and society are all built around relatively cheap gas. Even with the will and funding, fixing that is a multi-decade project. We can't flip a switch.
