Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Okay not for nothing, but "America" is a German mapmaker's homage to an Italian dude (and his given name, at that) who sailed in service of the Spanish and Portuguese Crowns. It's like named something The Gulf of Bob. 000
Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 10/10/2026(For non-Portlanders, there are seaplane bases both up- and downriver from downtown. There is zero reason a plane would need to take off in that location. The worst possible location.) 010
Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 10/10/2026*if the FAA is issuing such a permit in this context, then Congress should throw the book at Sean Duffy. If necessary, Congress can write new pages. Thankfully not written in blood. This time. 110
Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 10/10/2026Don't do this. It looks cool and is probably fun, but the risks are way too high, especially to random bystanders. Which is why, barring a special permit the pilot almost certainly does not have*, this is ten kinds of illegal. I hope the FAA throws the book at the pilot and buries them under it. 140

Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Often Trump can get away with this because Jill & Joe Taxpayer also don't have a good sense of the scale of the US economy. Big number big, yeah? But not here. Because Jill & Joe buy things. And this is not enough diesel for a significant and sustained reduction in prices, pump or downstream. 000
Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 09/10/2026In addition to the, ahem, treasonous aspect, this is another case of Trump not comprehending the scale of the government and nation he leads. In the raw these are big numbers, but in practice--even if they are delivered in total--they are... a week +/- of US diesel consumption. 100

Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 09/10/2026It's not good that the US is an incarceration nation. But given that we are, and that we apparently can place no practical limitations on investments to imprison ever more people and for longer sentences, it is *weird* that we even bother to have a death penalty, regardless of morality. 010

Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 08/10/2026This is, of course, ludicrous. That's not how any of this works. That said, ASU's gotta be low-key thrilled to be included in a list of such illustrious institutions. 110
Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 08/10/2026I similarly know people who wanted to have 3+ kids but--due to financial delay--got a late enough start that they stopped at 1 or 2. 010
Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 08/10/2026While I don't know that it's significant *at population scale*, I personally know several people who put having kids off for financial reasons until their mid-late thirties and then--finally ready--had unexpected life issues wipe out the rest of their child-bearing age. 120
Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Other than the hummingbird nectar I don't have a feeder out there (I don't want the mess), but some of the birds will occasionally check the plants for bugs and spiders and grab a little snack. Which I appreciate. 000
Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 07/10/2026In positive news, it took a couple of months, but the patio bird bath I set up is really paying off. Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 07/10/2026So I guess for me the questions are (1) how much content gets out the door before Gunn leaves, and (2) whether he and/or the Ellisons have incentives to make a spectacle out of his departure. 000
Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Ideally they'd let him just do his thing, but the DCU is way too big a line item, with way too much culture caché, that the new bosses are likely to remain hands-off. Seems likely to me that Gunn walks. Not immediately, but closer to sooner than later. 100
Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Curious to see what happens with James Gunn's DCU. On the one hand, he's been adept at balancing corporate, commercial, and artistic equities during his career. But, on the other, he seems like a guy with some core principles on which he is unwilling to compromise and which are out of alignment. 100
Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Yeah you'd probably want to set up some boutique, wholly-owned bank in a jurisdiction with lax financial laws to hold the bulk of your assets, and only trickle what you need into mainstream institutions. 030

Greer @thegreer.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Anyway my idea for a billionaire tax is that, six months after first becoming a billionaire--and assuming they remain a billionaire--we tax individuals 20% of height per annum. It'll be a progressive tax, so we'll start from the top. 120
