A serious shoutout must be given to the legend, @umhoops.com. College sports is better with coverage like his, and at a time when it sounded insane he began a Michigan basketball site that still stands as the pinnacle of what a team-specific site should be.

I hope I'm wrong but I've settled on the idea that unless the next Democratic president is a generational talent with a sharp focus and an iron will we can pack this whole thing up and go home

the democratic party has shown an enormous amount of willingness to resist its base on key issues. there's no world where you get some moderate into power and just pressure them to do the right thing.

the most important thing in 2028 is electing someone who is a true believer in the project of dismantling right-wing power. if you don't get that, then nothing else will matter very much.

It's so fucking convenient that they get to "fear for their lives" anytime they want to absolve themselves of anything and when we actually fear for our lives because of them and do anything a scared person would do it's justification for our death.

American law, it seems to me, exists to create a condition of constant titillation for people whose material needs are never unmet, but whose appetites have been teased into a state of ungovernable sadism by sloganeering & advertising that promises a return to a world that never existed & never will

a lot of political “scandal” coverage is just the media making a decision about whether public opinion needs a corrective

Imagine if we treated any other form of safety like this:"We should only install outlet covers in day care centers on a case-by-case basis, such as where a toddler has stuck his fingers in an electrical socket."
So instead of supporting universal daylighting, Brewer is now saying that the city should instead restrict parking at corners on a case-by-case basis, such as where there's been a crash or a fatality, a position that mimics that of the DOT.

focusing on the immediate fire and how it polls is also what prevents the opposition party from ever forming a coherent message and popular platform that can last across cycles instead of constant churn and insincere slogans based on micro-targeting and consultants

refusing to accept this isn’t just about “purity” or whatever, it’s about effective politics. someone who thinks it’s practical to cave on trans rights misunderstands how politics works, they don’t recognize that public opinion is forged by perseverance

this is a good illustration of what “compromise” on trans rights looks like. there’s no “everyone gets rights but we take it easy on the pronouns.” if you head down that road you will end up denying that trans people are real.

in 2020, these guys who fancied themselves the world's true leaders bore witness to the power of a large-scale social movement so big that it could shift public policy and strip power from them within their own organizations. it undermined their entire sense of themselves and they lost their minds.

i think the big middle event between george floyd protests and covid that accelerated this hard right turn in elite circles was tech employees using slack to stage walk-outs and force concessions from management. tech bosses got a first whiff of organized labor's power and started reading mein kampf

people really have some strange ideas about what exactly government is and isn't. "there's no way this body of people, money, and authority could ever possibly run a grocery store! now the Walton family, on the other hand, endowed by their Creator with the Grocer's Eye,"

i think this argument resonates with liberal moderates because the left’s rhetoric irritates them personally. But the idea that it’s responsible for ~10 point swings in public opinion is completely detached from the evidence.

a lot of pundits become obsessed with the little contours of conservative politics and ultimately get so lost in them that they get lapped by people who believe simple things like “republicans hate minorities and workers.”

i keep seeing the right argue that the nazi salutes are "trolling." i think there's some truth to that, but know what exactly is being mocked. they aren't mocking the idea that they could be nazis, they're mocking the idea that they should care one way or the other.

authoritarianism works in large part because they hold the money and the guns - they can present you with choices where, in a vacuum, compliance appears rational. but that’s an illusion; compliance is dangerous.

The fact of the matter is that PART of why the Democrats are floundering on trans issues so often is not because they are too focused on them but rather that they've been trying to ignore them this whole time and so have no plan for counterattacks.

One of my favourite things anyone has ever said about art. You'll be missed, David. 🌹
“Right here people might bring up Vincent van Gogh as an example of a painter who did great work in spite of—or because of—his suffering. I like to think that van Gogh would have been even more prolific and even greater if he wasn’t so restricted by the things tormenting him. I don’t think it was pain that made him so great—I think his painting brought him whatever happiness he had.” ― David Lynch

bob hope understood something a lot of people still can't reconcile: apologizing is actually really easy and you can do it as much as you want

Still, in 1989, in his mid-80s, Hope used the word "fag" on The Tonight Show. GLAAD immediately asked for a statement apologizing for the slur. Instead of telling them to get a sense of humor and calling them snowflakes, Hope shocked them by creating an original PSA for the organization on gay-bashing. Taped at his own expense, he gave it to GLAAD with permission to run it as much as they liked. "It was pretty extraordinary. We can't even get progressive artists to do that," Karin Schwartz, a GLAAD deputy director, said when it was announced.

When you're at a startup (I've worked at a few!) there's very little you need from the government or that gets in your way from them. But once you're an incumbent you're part of the rentier class and want to use the power of the state to crush your competitors while giving yourself a break.
